Snoopers can't find or access the files you hide using Folder Lock, even in DOS or under other operating systems. This application provides two levels of protection: you can merely lock files and folders, or you can encrypt them using the 256-bit Blowfish algorithm. When you boot up the program, it'll ask you for a master password. Hitting the Browse link locates and lock folders anywhere on your computer, or you can simply secure them via the context menu. Encryption is limited in the free version to 25 MB.
Although the too-cute-for-words interface doesn't make them easy to find, Folder Lock does have a treasure trove of Advanced features, accessible after you hit the Options button. You can set files to be shredded, force the computer to shut down after failed entry attempts, erase document history, the clipboard and more, and enter into Stealth mode, which hides the app's presence on your computer.
The interface, which includes simple animations for no reason other than to "entertain" you, would be better served by a more standard layout that makes options readily and easily available. No doubt to excite your inner lock-breaking child, the octagonal purplish blue layout is supplemented with three more skins when you purchase the full version.
In our tests, the program demonstrated good speed, even when securing large folders. If you share a PC and need to keep certain files to yourself, you should definitely give Folder Lock a try.
Publisher's description
From NewSoftwares :Folder Lock is fast file-security software that can password-protect, lock, hide, and encrypt any number of files, folders, drives, pictures, and documents in seconds. Locked files are undeletable, unrenamable, unmovable, hidden, and inaccessible. You can lock, scramble, or encrypt depending on speed and security. Folder Lock is fully portable, so you can protect your files on USB flash drives, disks, CD-RWs, notebooks, and hard disks, and it doesn't require installation on another PC. Folder Lock protects files in Windows, DOS, and Safe modes, even when you change your OS or boot from a disk. Folder Lock doesn't let you delete its own program folder, and it can't be uninstalled without the correct password. Additional options include Stealth Mode, Hacker Attempt Monitoring, Shred files, AutoLock, Auto Shutdown PC, Lock your PC, Erase PC tracks, 256-bit Blowfish Encryption and Context Menu in Explorer.

Version: Folder Lock 5.8.2
"DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM - ABOLUTELY USELESS"
Pros: Nothing. The makers of this piece of program should be ashamed of themselves for fleecing honest people out of their hard-earned money.
Cons: 1. In Windows Explorer, ensure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected AND "Hide system operating files" is NOT TICKED. 2. Re-boot and login under safe mode. 3. Go to the default installation folder (C:\Program Files\Folder Lock) and double-click on file called "Locked" (has no extension). This opens up the Locker folder and opening up the folder with garbled name shows all your "safe" files. Voila ! You can delete/modify/add with ease.
DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM.

Version: Folder Lock 5.8.2
Cons: I was amazed to find out that all you have to do to overcome this software is use a mac operating system. When I connected my back up drive to my imac and looked in my locker all my files were exposed, even with full encryption!!! Customer support told me they are addressing this "compatibility" issue with their November 2008 release. As far as I am concerned this is totally unacceptable.

Version: Folder Lock 5.8.2
Pros: interface good, lifelong upgrades.
Cons: I find that so called locked folder contents can be accessed simply with windows search. I have problems too after "successfully" locking certain folders that i can still gain access the usual way by clicking on them. This has been an ongoing problem for me despite contacting their support section and following instructions given.

Version: Folder Lock 5.8.2
Pros: As advertised, anything put into the designated "Locker" is hidden and/or encrypted. Can be run on USB key but does not hide/encrypt entire key, only the "Locker" folder on it. Customer service during upgrade attempt was outstanding.
Cons: Quirky interface that is not always intuitive. Cannot close program without hiding/encrypting the "Locker".

Version: Folder Lock 5.8.2
Cons: Absolute garbage. Researched it; thought it would work well... wrong. When using the search option through the start menu I could see and open all the files I placed in the "secure" locker folder. Secondly , it was a major ordeal to uninstall it. I finally figured out to right click the icon on the desk top to run as administrator, then I could uninstall. Otherwise I couldn't.
