Snoopers can't find or access the files you hide using Folder Lock, even in DOS or under other operating systems. This application provides two levels of protection: you can merely lock files and folders, or you can encrypt them using the 256-bit Blowfish algorithm. When you boot up the program, it'll ask you for a master password. Hitting the Browse link locates and lock folders anywhere on your computer, or you can simply secure them via the context menu. Encryption is limited in the free version to 25 MB.

Although the too-cute-for-words interface doesn't make them easy to find, Folder Lock does have a treasure trove of Advanced features, accessible after you hit the Options button. You can set files to be shredded, force the computer to shut down after failed entry attempts, erase document history, the clipboard and more, and enter into Stealth mode, which hides the app's presence on your computer.

The interface, which includes simple animations for no reason other than to "entertain" you, would be better served by a more standard layout that makes options readily and easily available. No doubt to excite your inner lock-breaking child, the octagonal purplish blue layout is supplemented with three more skins when you purchase the full version.

In our tests, the program demonstrated good speed, even when securing large folders. If you share a PC and need to keep certain files to yourself, you should definitely give Folder Lock a try.

"Gives me peace of mind."

February 26, 2008  |  By jaycee_rocker

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

Once installed it is easy to use, simply copy files into its locker and instruct it to encrypt. After some months I did have a problem with my anti virus software mistakenly identifying a trojan horse in the FL software. I contacted the developers and they promptly put together a very comprehensive solution to the problem that got me back working again. I was impressed with this level of support.

Cons

The user instructions to use FL on CD-ROM is not too clear although it does work once you read in between the lines.

"BEWARE"

February 22, 2008  |  By prasser

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

The user interface is very smooth and easy to use. Support is excellent.

Cons

"I myself often carry sencitive and confidential material between my computer at home and at work. Both computers run Windows, so this is not the issue. But in case I loose my flash drive, everybody can gain acces to the material just by using an Apple Computer." This was what I wrote to Support. YOUR DATA IS NOT SECURE ON A FLASH DRIVE, EVERYBODY CAN READ IT, JUST USING AN APPLE COMPUTER. According to support, this issue will be solved in a version coming September 2008.

"Horrible!!"

February 22, 2008  |  By ddhardt40

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

Nothing!!

Cons

Do NOT be scammed and waste your money on this product. As of tonight files that we had locked have now vanished ( good thing we had backups) and the computer has gone to the BSOD ( blue screen of death) I Will most likely have to do a complete restore to the computer. Will try to boot in safe mode first and see if I can delete the program. Buyer Beware! I would hate to see anyone else lose their info and have their computer hosed. Also I saw where it was mentioned that if you had the software PerfectDisk you would get the BSOD. I don't have PerfectDisk, just so folks know if they do not have PD it does not mean they won't still get the BSOD from this crappy piece of software.

"I Can confirm with Linux"

February 21, 2008  |  By mt_deb

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

Hubby runs Winblows. I do Linux and can confirm that all files are visible if opened in Linux. My main distro is Sidux ( give Sidux a try by the way ) but it is the same for all Linux distros. This is only a slight concern to my hubby as he knows not a whole lot of people use Linux. BUT, it is something the company should disclose IMO

Cons

Company should be upfront in telling folks that Linux and possibly other OS's besides Windows can get to "locked" files with ease

"Only Hides files and not encrypt as far as USB drives go."

February 17, 2008

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

It hides the file from people who do not understand how file systems work. An Average user who does not care about security will find this useful against other average users. As it will hide the folder name from windows by using the name "??????". An average user can not physically type that folder name, so I guess windows does not show it for that reason?

Cons

For Folder Lock version 5.8.0:

The folder is not visible to windows. Although if you use Ubuntu or Ubuntu Live CD, you can see the folder and look in the contents with no effort at all. The folder name does not fool Ubuntu (which is a Linux version of an OS I use).

I have tested folder lock on my USB drive. I tried this twice, because I could not believe I bought a program that does not do what it says it does!

My personal Test:

First I used Folder Lock to move itself onto my USB drive. Then I copied the files into Folder Lock's Locked folder. I instructed Folder Lock to encrypt the files. I safely removed my USB, then I shutdown windows. I booted up Ubuntu Live CD 7.10. When the OS was ready, I inserted my USB drive and allowed Ubuntu to mount the drive. Then all I did was go to the "Folder Lock" folder and to my astonishment there was a folder called "Locked" with a lock icon on the folder. I doubled clicked it and there was a folder called "??????" which was pretty odd. So I doubled clicked the funny looking named folder and again, to my astonishment.. All the folders and files that was suppose to be encrypted I had complete access to!

In the end, I must either look for another program or make it myself.

Try this method and repost your comments.

P.S. The test was only used to see if it does what it says on the USB Drive. "Hide and Encrypt." I was hoping it would at least encrypt something! I know that Linux can find hidden files and yet encryption would have been a good backup for those special documents so that no OS could see it.

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.8

Pros

Cons

i downloaded this program and can't delete it with out paying them to register the software. and from various sites on the internet the program isn't any good to begin with. I'm sure they're breaking some law some how and I'm surprised cnet lets it stay on the site.
