Editors' Review

Snoopers can't find or access the files you hide using Folder Lock, even in DOS or under other operating systems. This application also erases your Recent Documents history, so intruders don't know what to search for. The attractive lock-like interface presents the program functions simply. You can click on the Browse link to locate and lock folders anywhere on your computer, or you can simply secure them via a right-click. You also have the option to shred files for permanent removal, monitor hackers who try to break in to your secured files, and enable stealth mode so would-be wrongdoers can't even see the folders you have locked. In our tests, the program demonstrated good speed, even when securing large folders. If you share a PC and need to keep certain files to yourself, you should definitely have a look at this application.

"Loved it before I did not."

May 05, 2014  |  By N1900Z

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

Great Idea. Fast, easy, Pretty cool.

Cons

Works great at first then It crashes, Your info in locker stuck, you cant get to it, like having a lock box, A key for the box, but the box is out of reach.
Undependable.

Summary

Undependable. I have read from others about folder lock crashing a lot and it happened to me. Had some important info in a floder locker, went to open it and It would not open, I get a "Folder lock Crashed" error message, I tried restarting PC and still no go. Luckily I had a copy of the install and installed Folder lock on another PC, then moved my locked file over to that PC and was able to open it again.

I will not be using this program any longer because I can not depend on it. If they get it fixed in the future I would love to use it again but at this point why bother.

I have other ways of storing my info safely and will stick to those.

This was a 5 star for the month I used it with no problem, but now I do not trust it.

""Does exactly what it says on the tin""

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

very simple to use and does exactly what you need it to do, which is hide/lock away certain files you want to keep from spying eyes

Cons

i guess it is a little expensive for what it does..

"Works like they say it does!"

January 25, 2006  |  By Popeye250

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

Program works well on all drives but not on cd's. Operating the program was a bit confusing at first but I had it figured out in about 15 minutes without having to contact tech support.

Cons

I have a file on my desktop that is protected. When I boot the computer the file is visible and can be opened until the boot is complete. You may want to keep protected files burried in one or two other files.

"a disaster"

January 23, 2006  |  By t-mc

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Cons

Data can be lost altogether with one false move. For example, if you install a new version of the software without "parking" your encrypted data elsewhere, your data will disappear and will be irretrievable. Folder Lock also creates a file called windrvnt.sys, which can cause your computer to crash repeatedly when it conflicts with other software--and it conflicts with a lot of software. Antivirus programs, backup programs, and Spybot are three I know of--all resulting in blue screen of death repeatedly. Tech support is nonexistent--no one will reply to your plea for help. There should be some mechanism for keeping products like this off the market.

"Fine product but does not work on CDs"

January 14, 2006  |  By grmertz

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

Works well to protect files on hard drives or flash drives.

Cons

Does not work on CDs. If you follow the instructions the CD will be locked only on a system with Folder Lock installed, if the CD is put into a non Folder Lock system it is readable. The Email response from vendor is they are working on it.

"Great simple little app that does what it's supposed to do."

December 27, 2005  |  By mikedelugg

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

The basic process of locking the special documents you want locked is easy. Folder Lock scrambles the data inside its (one) LOCKER folder and you must have the password to unscramble (access) it. There are 3 levels of security, but probably the lowest (and fastest) level is enough for most folks (including me). At least once/week I unlock my folder and back it up straight to CD without encryption. That CD is safely hidden and I can always get the data back without having to reinstall in case of a HD crash.

Some interface items are unique and different from many other Win apps; they take a bit of getting used to. E.g., actually finding the "check for updates" option was difficult. It turns out that the easiest way is to check the website regularly. The link was in there, somewhere. ;-)

Overall I do like Folder Lock, and I've come to depend upon it. I don't think it's overpriced at all.

Cons

ONLY ONE SPECIAL FOLDER may be locked. Some things take just a bit to get used to. But after playing around for a while (on a small expendable duplicate folder I created) Folder Lock yielded most of its secrets. To download revision updates (as in 3.1->3.2) you MUST keep your order number and use the same email address, then a link is sent. That's a bit inconvenient - but updates are FREE!

"Nice..... if I want everything under one file."

December 24, 2005  |  By tehahn1

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

It's nice and easy to use. If you want one file to hold everything you want private.

Cons

You've got to be serious...this much money for something that puts everything into 1-that's "one' file? NOOOOOOO each file should be protected.

"Creates instability"

December 24, 2005  |  By crispee

 |  Version: Folder Lock 5.3.5

Pros

Great interface and fairly easy to use.

Cons

Created many blue screen reboots that did not occur before I installed it. I only use it on a mountable drive now. I checked the net and the crashes are not uncommon with this program. Be sure to demo first. Encryption mighty slow.
