File Transfer Protocol may not necessarily be the safest way to transfer files, but it's still one of the most popular. If you need to use FTP to move files in your network, the browser add-on FireFTP makes it easy. It's Fire(fox) + FTP ... get it?

FireFTP only works with Firefox, of course. To use it, you need to have the browser installed first. Then once you've approved the addition of the FireFTP extension, it's tucked away nicely in the "Web Developer" menu.

FireFTP employs the dual-window interface of most standalone FTP clients, running within a standard Firefox tab or window. The add-on supports all the sorts of connections that you'd expect from a standard FTP client and can handle several different accounts. FTP accounts can be grouped by category, both of which are accessible via drop-down menu. The options for FireFTP are available from the standard Add-Ons "Options" button or from the "Tools" button in the main FireFTP interface, and include everything a standard FTP user would expect--proxy settings, concurrent transfer limits, duplicate rules, compression options, and filters are only the beginning.

One noticeable limitation of FireFTP is that it can't process files larger than 2GB. Transferring files within that file-size limit, however, was remarkably fast, pushing the limits of my consumer-level broadband connection.

If you need a simple FTP program with few frills, FireFTP fits the bill. It's rare to find a Firefox extension that would make any user switch browsers, but if you're already using Firefox and need to transfer files over FTP, you should be very happy with FireFTP. It works seamlessly while still having enough features to please power users.
