Open in VLC Media Player is a browser extension that transfers media resource links from webpages to the VLC desktop application via a connected native client application. It detects audio and video elements on a page, then adds a context menu integration and toolbar trigger to forward selected URLs. 

When multiple media sources are present, a selection prompt appears to choose specific links. Open in VLC Media Player includes a media join tool that combines detected streams into a single WAV output file. Communication between the browser and VLC occurs through a locally installed bridge component that receives and executes the link request.

Launch local player

When Open in VLC Media Player detects media resources, it monitors webpage elements and activates its controls. A right-click action displays a menu entry tied to the selected element, extracts the underlying URL, and passes it to the local client. That client relays the address to VLC, where playback begins using the received stream. The toolbar icon changes state when compatible elements are present, indicating that link extraction is available.

When multiple streams are present on a page, a prompt interface appears listing the detected media URLs. Each entry corresponds to a parsed resource identified during page scanning. Selecting one or more items sends them to the native client in sequence. This process relies on local message passing rather than direct browser playback, allowing VLC to handle decoding and rendering once the transfer completes.

A secondary feature enables combining multiple media inputs into a single audio file. Triggered via the page action menu, the join process selects streams and merges them into a WAV output. The resulting file is stored locally and can then be opened or converted within VLC. This function operates independently of direct playback, focusing on aggregation rather than streaming, and outputs are limited to the WAV format.
