Display the safety rating of links as you surf with Internet Explorer, but this freeware add-on fails to rate all the URLs you'll see during normal browsing.
Finjan SecureBrowsing for Internet Explorer's toolbar contains little more than a big button to the publisher's Web site and a simple pull-down menu with a handful of links and two program settings. With a click users can show only when a link is potentially dangerous or all three ratings: Safe, Unsafe, and Not Scanned. The default is all three, which doesn't figure well for novices who neglect to properly configure software. Helpfully, the rating icons are the obvious green check mark for Safe, red X for Unsafe, and a yellow question mark for Not Scanned sites. Unhelpfully, a tooltip fails to explain site rating reasons, but merely restates what the icon indicates.
The pop-up's More Information link takes you to the Finjan Web site to reiterates the message and display the link's rating category. We found ratings appeared on Google and Yahoo searches, but failed to appear on MetaCrawler, Dogpile, or WebCrawler.
Finjan SecureBrowsing for Internet Explorer is free and useful, but doesn't warrant a toolbar's real estate. Still, novice and less-experienced users will find that the add-on provides some safety assurance to links found through Google or Yahoo searches. Advanced users may find more useful one of the more complete tools in the genre.
