Editors' review

FileZilla Portable is a handy and free file transfer protocol (FTP) client, something that's been available in many forms since the earliest days of the Internet. What's different about FileZilla Portable is the "portable" part; unlike other FTP clients, the whole program is totally portable. You can install it on a USB flash drive, insert the drive in any computer, and use FileZilla without installing anything else and without leaving any personal information behind.

FileZilla Portable (formerly Portable FileZilla) is, as the name suggests, a portable version of the well-known FileZilla FTP client. It's one of many free portable versions of popular open-source applications developed and published by PortableApps, which also offers portable versions of Mozilla's Firefox Web browser and the OpenOffice.org office productivity suite. Portable applications are big fun in small packages, and we're big fans here at the testing lab; we're fans of open-source code and freeware, too. But FileZilla Portable, like other PortableApps freeware, is particularly nice, with a well-designed graphical user interface that's a welcome departure from the starkness of most portable software. It installs easily on your USB drive, iPod, external hard drive, or any portable storage device, or you can run it from a CD. It works as well as the full-size FileZilla, but it goes everywhere and leaves no trace.

FileZilla Portable is free, and it works well in both Windows Vista and 7. Try it; you'll like it. Give some of PortableApp's other cool tools a try, too.

"Insecure, do no use portable app"

    June 11, 2014   |   By Narfe

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.7.3

    Pros

FileZilla is a great piece of software, but the portable version is not made by them and is insecure.

    Cons

This portable version stores all ftp account passwords in a plaintext xml file.

    "Great FTP program"

    July 16, 2013   |   By DexterHaven-CK

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.7.1.1

    Pros

Easy set up. Installed on thumb drive, ran it, and was downloading in less than two minutes. Super easy to use.

The caveat is you have to have a basic understanding of FTP. Really basic. There is also help. And if you really don't have a clue as to what you are doing, try using a search engine and read about using FTP.

    Cons

I have not found any yet.

    "Favorite of all FTP proggy's"

    June 29, 2013   |   By DaDreamWizard

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.7.1

    Pros

Does what it should fairly easily. Being familiar with the way ftp programs work is always a plus, and there's no choice but to learn. But it's simple to use. As functional as the one's that cost dollars and it just seems cleaner, less cluttered.

    Cons

none really - first time I ever installed was up and running and retrieving within 5 minutes. No Fumbels McGee menu's or confusion.

    Summary

Had 75% of the ftp programs over the years. And I just took a liking to this and it didn't cost a dime.

Oh there's ftp programs that have that super compact look - nice yes. But they're involved, I'd even go to say confusing at times.

Bottom line, it works nicely to say the least. And if your new to this, if I were you I'd go with this. If this were the first ftp app I'd ever had I'd have avoided way to many love/hate relationships with other software.

    Updated on Jun 29, 2013

note: I just changed over to using portable versions when feasible. Hence this review goes for both the installer version and portable versions.

"The Best Choice For Windows 8"

    December 30, 2012   |   By Mike98

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.6.2

    Pros

Easy to install. No problem(s) and no error(s). Works excellent. I was sceptical about FileZilla Portable, because I used FileZilla with often connection broken and program hanging when I was uploading files to the server with Windows XP. FileZilla remembers which folder you were using when uploading last.

    Cons

    There are no cons.

    Summary

FileZilla Portable is very clean and I think the writer omitted the flwas of FileZilla in FileZilla Portable.

    "The best I have seen."

    January 03, 2012   |   By jbalboa

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.5.2

    Pros

    It's better than "IPswitch's WS_FTP Pro."
You can drag and drop within the host server.
    It's very robus.
It's PORTABLE, so you can run it from a USB flash drive in any PC.
    And best of all . . . IT'S FREE.

    Cons

    None . . . It's perfect.

    Summary

I have used the professional stuff and let me tell you, this FileZilla does a better job and it's free.

    "Pffffftt!!!!"

    April 10, 2011   |   By skeptic1st

    Version: FileZilla Portable 3.4

    Pros

    It's easy to install.

    Cons

Another empty hole with no direction signs.

    Summary

You'd think by now that somebody would have figured out how to communicate simple things to normal minds, but this software proves that's still an illusion.

What's so hard about having labels like "move/copy from" and "move/copy to?"

Oh, nooooooooooooooooooo! That would never do! Let 'em figure it out--it's free, f*** 'em!

I have not been impressed with any of the products from this company. They are drastically over-rated and over-hyped.

    This is a pure dog.
