• 'Customer Service' is a joke. Rip off, unprofessional

  The program worked ok when I had access to it. But that's it really. The cons should make you stay far away from this product.

  This is the transcript of the complete email exchange I had with their 'Customer Service'. Very vague. Not helpful. You need to pay again folks. ME - Hi, How do I transfer my license to use your product from one PC to another? My HD is failing and I need to do this asap. Thanks. THEM - Activate it with your serial. ME - Thanks. How do I locate my serial number? THEM - https://www.smartftp.com/customer ME - Thanks. I have the serial number now. However, when I enter it at the 'activate' screen I get a message that says 'License error: Unknown'. Any idea? THEM - Install the latest version and try again. ME - Now it tells me 'License error: Maintenance expired.' THEM - You can renew the maintenance here: (They sent a link with my serial number.) ME - So you are asking me to pay for this again, am I right? THEM - No. This is not what the reply implied. ME - So, how do I 'renew the maintenance?' THEM - crickets.... (I didn't hear back from them)

  Summary

  If you want to transfer your license to a new computer you have to pay the fee again. There are other, much better options on the market.

  Works until you have to download it again

  You buy a "perpetual" license. But as soon as a new version comes out, you can't download the version you PAID for, meaning it is worthless. It was even worse in my situation. I had a minor annoyance (an extra click) that I asked support about. They told me it had been fixed in the new version, NOT TELLING ME THAT I'D HAVE TO PAY AGAIN. With my old version gone, there is no way to download it again. I've moved to FileZilla -- just as good, completely free, open source (no adware, etc) and well-supported.

  Just like the other reviews have said -- sleazy business practices. AVOID at all costs.

• Nice application but too buggy for this price

  Pros

  - this app have much useful features and supports different connections type, including SSH - nice Transfer Manager but it not always works correctly - bookmarks manager, all your passwords will saved autmotically

  Cons

  - cost too much for this app - won't upload files to different servers (FTP, FTPS) for no apparent reason. only application restart helps me - problems when you trying to copy file located on remote server to other folder on same/or other server. You must to download file to you PC, and then upload to new folder. - unstable

  Summary

  have been using SmartFTP for a few months now and can tell you I have wasted my money! Often it simply , files just get stuck in the queue, and to cure this I have to close and restart the application. I am very disappointed in SmartFTP and will soon be looking for a replacement application which is more robust.

• WORST CUSTOMER SUPPORT POSSIBLE

  Customer support is basically anti-customer.

  Like pretty much all of the previous comments, to say the customer support is dismissive, would be an understatement. Paid customer: minimum $40 a year bill to stay "subscribed" to having this software work. If you accidentally take an update past your expiration, forget it, they won't provide you with the last working version even when directly asked, whether in their forums or directly through their email customer support. The money you spent is literally ... GONE. No more working FTP client. Asking for support usually ends up in being ignored. I would highly recommend NOBODY PAY for this software, no matter how much you like it. Trust me, you'll end up regretting it at some point later. Really, the BBB should be looking into this place.

  I paid 40 bucks, after a few months the activation expired and they said to pay for a new activation.

  Pros

  Works pretty well with Unix and Linux FTP servers. Nice UI.

  Cons

  Doesn't work at all well with OpenVMS FTP servers. Also the vendors licensing policy sucks; if you don't continue paying annual license fees then after a while they cut you off and even the version that you originally paid for stops working! Also they don't respond to questions unless you are currently paid up. Basically it's keep paying or they don't want to know you! Pretty good product, but terrible business practices.

  SmartFTP will not sell you a perpetual license. They claim to, but when your maintenance program runs out, your license will mysteriously stop working and their only suggestion is to get the latest version, which requires you renew you maintenance program. This is a subscription service, PERIOD!! So don't let them fool you to thinking you have a perpetual license!!

  You cannot uninstall 64-bit version. They do not include uninstall utility - so better to avoid that soft.

  Pros

  None. They are obsolete compared to CuteFTP on both support and features. They will take your money and not refund you.

  Cons

  Never been treated so badly by a company. I've had multiple issues with SmartFTP, and even as a *PAID* user, I was either ignored or told to try my luck in the forums. Support often takes over a week to answer, and I'm told to either restart my machine, or given scripted instructions that have nothing to do with the issues. They won't refund your money either.

  Summary

  Go with CuteFTP.
