Any number of Internet Explorer toolbars include a free RSS feed reader, so one for sale better add something new or special to the process. Feed Scout, which worked fine, offers only a basic feed reader with no new twists. Feed Scout adds a toolbar that take up a lot of room, especially when compared with the one-button option found in other toolbars. Still, some may appreciate that every option, from viewing feeds to filtering content, is visible for easy access.

Feed Scout includes preset categories and feeds, but makes it easy to add you own. Adding additional feeds uses a wizard-like approach, but seems to involve more steps than is warranted. The reader doesn't offer the standard headline list in a ticker or pop-up window. Feeds are shown full-screen in your browser window, with the headline and the first few sentences of the full story. Headlines helpfully link to the source site to make it easy to open the full story.

The demo displays a nag that you're using an unregistered version of the program, but there aren't any other trial limitations. While it was fairly easy to add and view feeds, Feed Scout has been surpassed by dozens of apps in this genre. If you want a feed reader, there are plenty of more robust freeware programs available.
