CNET Editors' review
FILEminimizer Office is another contender in a long list of file compression programs, but despite a pretty user interface, we found its commands unintuitive.
The program features colorful, almost cartoonish, command buttons at the top of its user interface. But the vague titles for each did little to tell us what they actually do. Help is available as an FAQ on the publisher's Web site, but it didn't address any of our questions. We first clicked the Open Files button and one by one, added the files we wanted to compress. The user interface lacked any kind of flow. The Optimize Files button is in the middle of the window, so clicking it first bypasses any of the save and compression settings at the bottom of the window. Still, the program successfully compressed our files. From there, we clicked on the Pack and Go to e-mail our compressed files. The Configurations menu gives you the option of replacing the original file once it's been compressed, adding a specified extension to the file name, flattening any embedded objects, and selecting the output folder.
Because of the trial limitation, you're only allowed a pitiful 12 uses before a watermark is added to the file. That, coupled with the poorly designed user interface, certainly doesn't make this program competitive in the tightly packed field of file compression programs. We suggest you try other programs that offer a more user-friendly approach.
Publisher's Description
From Balesio Software:
FILEminimizer Office--compress PowerPoint presentations, Word documents and Excel spreadsheets without changing the file formats. FILEminimizer Office (the new PPTminimizer) reduces the size of PowerPoint, Word & Excel files by up to 98% using an intelligent compression technique which preserves the original file format and quality. The optimized files are then much smaller, safer and ideal for sharing and sending via email. Recipients don't need the software to edit or view the optimized files. Mailboxes, servers and networks are relieved and loading time is accelerated.
Version 5.0 adds supports for all new Office 2007 formats (XLSX, DOCX, PPTX).
What's new in this version: - Compression of Excel files (XLS) - Compression of ALL new Office 2007 formats (XLSX, DOCX, PPTX) - Improved search wizard

"Blatant Lie"
Version: FILEminimizer Office 6.0
Pros
It did compress my file as promised. From 10mb it went to 7mb.
Cons
I went to the company's site and downloaded the Fileminimizer Suite (http://www.balesio.com/fileminimizersuite/eng/download.php) and installed it for the express purpose of compressing a single Powerpoint file that was giving me trouble.
I then launched the program, compressed the file, and was mildly pleased to see it had shrunk from 10mb to 7mb. I then opened my Powerpoint to see how my presentation looked post-compression.
Imagine my shock when I saw, boldly planted IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERY SLIDE, a big watermark saying "OPTIMIZED USING TRIAL VERSION WWW.BALESIO.COM".
The "Free to try (Watermark after 12 optimizations)" is an outright lie. It puts a watermark on your file ON THE FIRST TRIAL.
I can understand putting watermarks on if they want to. But misleading users so that we waste time downloading, installing, and using their program only to find the "watermark after 12 optimizations" is an outright lie and it puts on the watermark on the FIRST OPTIMIZATION is disgusting.Summary
Untrustworthy and piggy about it.

"Software that saves me time and money"
Version: FILEminimizer Office 5.0
Pros
Great compression for all Microsoft Office files (and I mean all - Excel, PowerPoint and Word and even works with my Office 2007 files).
Really easy to use and I love the Outlook add-in (I can compress files as soon as I hit the send button).Cons
I wish I had found this product earlier. To date, I really have nothing to complain about.
Summary
As a freelance marketer, I very rarely have the time to look for and purchase software, but when a friend suggested to me to have a look at FILEminimizer because I was always complaining about having problems sending my presentations and briefs to my customers due to the large size of the files, I thought I would give it a go.
And WOW was I astounded! Where has this product been all my life? FILEminimizer does exactly what it is meant to do, compresses your Microsoft Office files without any noticeable change. I would never have believed the high compression rates possible but there it is. I managed to reduce an 83MB marketing presentation right down to 5MB. The first thing I checked of course was the image quality and on closer inspection between my original file and the compressed version I could not make out any difference. And the best thing is - I can now email it directly to my client. No more need to burn the presentations to CDs and post them out!
All in all, this is a fantastic product that has now saved me time AND money. -

Not bad job of compression with the free trial version. Sometimes it was more successful than others.

Too costly for what it does. Probably worth about 15 bucks.

No original functionality here. The market is overcrowded with these types of utility.
