ExtractNow could use a bit of sprucing up. The dead-simple and cheetah-quick installation brings you to an expanse of white that sits on top of four buttons. That's it. It's not an interface that sells the feature set, but it's the feature set that users will be most interested in.

The program should appeal to users who handle a high volume of archives, because all it does is extract archive contents. The four buttons--Settings, History, Clear, and Extract--lay out the basics. Click Settings and a window pops up to entice you with options. From the boilerplate specials like Always on Top or Start with Windows to more detailed customizations such as delineating a default extraction directory, setting file extensions to ignore, and adjusting post-extraction behavior, ExtractNow gives users as much flexibility as possible when it comes to batch archive extractions. You can, for instance, set it to delete archives after their files have been extracted.

It is not an archiver, though, and won't be able to replace your favorite archiver. But if you're more about receiving than giving when it comes to ZIPs, RARs, and TARs, ExtractNow can save you a massive amount of time.

"Works really well and and really fast."

April 17, 2010  |  By mookiemu

 |  Version: ExtractNow 4.39

Pros

Very fast and you don't have to sort out files. I just drag the RAR files into the window and press the "extract" button and it takes care of separating and extracting each file into each folder.

Cons

none I can think of and I've been using it for a few months now.

Summary

This is a terrific tool. I love the very simple and minimalist interface. Because of the simple interface, you have very little overhead and very few bugs. It does what it's meant to do and nothing else. I love that.
I have a version installed on my windows 7 machine I also installed it on my Ubuntu box via WINE. It works really well under WINE in Linux and I prefer it to anything that I've found in Linux or Windows.
For Rar files, I even prefer this to 7zip.

Works really, really well in Linux using WINE.

"Absolute must-have for torrents or newsgroup binaries."

March 06, 2010  |  By whirledorder

 |  Version: ExtractNow 4.39

Pros

Being able to reassemble archives that have been segmented and then the segments compressed in folders before posting to newsgroups is nothing short of miraculous. The interface is perfect, it runs fast, and it is stable.Great program!

Cons

I love everything about this app. If I had to change anything, I would make a custom "drag target" onto which you could drop your files/folders/archives (much like the original DropStuff or StuffitExpander). But even that's not necessary.

Summary

When people claim that they wish that this software did more, they are taking for granted just how great this program is without any additional features. I mean, it works (even in Windows 7) and it's fast and I've never had a problem with it. It's an excellent program that hasn't been bloated with useless features, hasn't been overwhelmed by some tragic custom user interface, and hasn't promised to do more than it it is supposed to do. It's perfect just the way it is.

"Does it's job, could use a 'password feature'."

February 03, 2010  |  By CheesePouch

 |  Version: ExtractNow 4.39

Pros

Does it's jobl. Simple. Fills a need not met by many (any?) other freeware downloads. Clean. Doesn't smell. Replaces toilet paper roll when the last one has been used up...etc

Cons

No 'password' feature. Would be nice if you could just designate a password to be used for each session so that you didn't have to check back every 30 seconds and manually enter the digits all over again.

Summary

good freeware. works, no bugs, easy to learn, could use a password feature though.

"Easy, light, quick & good functionality"

February 02, 2010  |  By jaredzusmc

 |  Version: ExtractNow 4.39

Pros

It is very easy to use and supports multiple file extraction.

Cons

As said above, will not replace my favorite extractors. No compression capabilities, but wasn't looking for one. I was looking to compare this against my current favorites. 1 to extract & compress archives (.rar, etc.) & other for pars & rars

Summary

Bottom line is that it is a very easy and decent utility. Get's the job done for multi-tasks. Too light for me, and does not support 1 or 2 of my favorite archive types. I gave it 3 stars, although, I wish there were a 3-1/2 because it certainly is better than a 3 star review.

"Crashes when fed an .IMA archive file"

January 27, 2010  |  By UpajOs

 |  Version: ExtractNow 4.39

Pros

Can't say, because the program doesn't work

Cons

Crashes immediately when one tires to extract an IMA file.

Summary

I tried installing ExtractNow version 4.3.9.0 on both a Windows 98SE and a WIndows XP SP2 system. As soon as I tried to extract the contents of DosBootImage.IMA from Nero 6 to take a peek at what's inside, the program crashed. Even if the file I tried wasn't a valid .IMA archive, ExtractNow should not have crashed. It appears to have a memory leak.
