Although you might suppose EarthLink Toolbar exists only to promote the company's services, it offers value even to nonsubscribers. It blocks spyware and pop-ups and performs searches on various sites. You can, for instance, search for items on eBay and visit weather sites. The pop-up blocking didn't work very well in our tests, allowing floating ads to get through. The spyware tool also didn't prove very useful, though it offered some basic protection. We do like the antiphishing utility, which alerts you to possible Internet scams. In sum, though EarthLink Toolbar has its good points, it's not the most powerful or convenient toolbar on the market.
