Learning a musical instrument is at least as much about training the ear as it is about finger dexterity. EarMaster School offers an interactive course in musical theory and careful listening, with exercises aimed at helping students distinguish musical intervals, chords, and rhythmic patterns.
It offers a large variety of tutorials, with both a standard and a jazz mode that can help develop different styles, along with the ability to set difficulty levels depending on experience. The interface is clean and appealing, and we found we rarely had to resort to the comprehensive help files. We would happily recommend the software to any beginning music student as a valuable complement to practicing an instrument.
