"good"

November 11, 2006  |  By masta_pupa

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

Great for complete hard drive backups

Cons

can only backup the whole hard drive, would be nice to select file and folders you want to backup and not just the whole hard drive, its a bit hard to keep backing up 200gig+ hard drives

"Works Perfect and FREE"

October 28, 2006  |  By Mike Hansen

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

Simple, this program is perfect. Very easy to use. I backup to a 2nd HD partition. Recovery is simple, but you need to use something like BartPE disc with diXML included. Amatures will have problems with this.

Cons

Runtime Software should include an ISO image for a bootable CD to perform recovery task. Not a complaint, just my wish.

"Almost Perfect"

October 19, 2006  |  By The user with no name

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

I found this program over a year ago and have been using it ever since. It can split images, can backup to/from USB drives, use 'raw' mode and backup the COMPLETE partition (raw requires as much space on another drive as the size of the drive you're backing up!), leave 'raw' unchecked and make an image of only the used HDD space, and it can compress images to save space. IT WILL NOT BURN THE IMAGE FOR YOU. But you can use any burning program to do that! And just like the newer ghosts it can make a backup of your C drive while you are still in windows doing stuff.

There IS a learning curve because you MUST create a Bart PE disc so that you can put your image back on your hard drive in the event of failure (even newer Ghosts uses a CD to do this-- although they give you a pre-made PE). The Bart PE (Pre-Installation) CD requires gathering some files (the site shows which ones), having a Win XP PRO disc (Home WILL work but for Bart to FULLY work use Pro). When placing an image back onto a drive you must:

1) ALREADY have a partition on the drive

2) The partition MUST be the same size OR bigger than the partition the image was made from (this means that even though you may have an image file that is only 8GB if it came off a 250GB hard drive you cannot put it back on anything less than 250.. although putting it on a drive bigger than 250 will work. Ghost does not have this limitation. This means that whatever size your HDD is when you back it up, if it fails and/or you buy a new one you can never downsize your drive if you are going to use your already made XML image)

Bart PE does have MS Disc Management built in (so you can format drives) but I can't get it to work (perhaps because I didnt use XP PRO instead using my XP Home???) I worked around this by also installing the plug-in called "Swiss Knife plug in for Bart PE". With this I can format the drive no problem if I need to.

THE BEST free backup tool available and if you can ignore the issues then it's HIGHLY Recommended!

Cons

The only other problem is that I use DBAN (Derik's Boot and Nuke) periodically to wipe my drive (HIGHLY RECOMMEND DBAN it 'shreds' your drive and all its contents and it's free!). If I wipe only the partition then no problem. But if I wipe the drive (hence remove the partition) then I need Swiss Knife to put a partition back for me in Bart PE before I reinstall my image. Sometimes I need my PC before DBAN finishes and I stop my wipe (you can define the wipe method and number of passes!). When I do this XML just cannot seem to put my image back on. In those cases I have to use an old ghost image and when that is done I can ALWAYS go back and use XML to put my newest image back on.

This means to me that IF something REALLY terrible happened to a drive (maybe in the boot sector?? Really don't know what happens when I stop DBAN from finishing the wipe) that XML may not be able to work.

Now I need to say that this is THE ONLY reason why I might tell someone to buy ghost. And again this is only when I MYSELF mess my drive up by stopping a disc wipe. And it has NEVER failed in any other circumstance....

So you be the judge.. I do still use XML, although I do keep an old ghost image around for those times I stop the wipe and may still go and pay the money for ghost just to remove the maybe 1-2% risk that something will happen to a drive and XML wont be able to put the image back on.

"invest the time, learn something new"

August 23, 2006  |  By hmazuji

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

the learning curve is way out there, you will need:1. isobuster to create a bootable cd, 2. nero burning rom or roxio to burn a cd containing an updated service pack, improvise if you want to use sonic. 3. barts preinstall environment for something i got tired of this and will have to come back to it, as well as 4. the xml plugins and then probably something else. after you have jumped through the hoops you will have learned alot. the instructions are detailed. my pc will asimilate and become one with the others.

Cons

when you have to reinvent the wheel, only then will you understand the circle. run away if you don't have the time to invest here.

"Excellent - switched from Ghost which I have used for years."

July 10, 2006  |  By bobreeves

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

The ultimate solution for backing up a modern laptop (without a floppy) - you'll need a writable cd or dvd along with BartPE to create a boot cd/dvd to restore.

I could not find any reviews that actually tested the restore, so I did. Booted BartPE with DriveImage XML, formatted my C drive in the laptop, then did a restore (all over home network to another PC). You could also backup to CD or DVD, but much slower. Subsequent boot to the C drive brought up XP just the way I left it. Can't say enough about this program. My son and I both experienced either software (me) or hardware (my son) failures recently which encouraged me to investigate freeware solutions, and this combo IS IT!

Cons

None

"The Perfect Backup Program"

June 16, 2006  |  By blarggs

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

This program is fast and effective. It backed up my 12gig-full HD in less than 30 mins. Make sure you check out the guide at habibbijan.com/guides/driveimage2.php and make a BartPe CD, because you can't restore to your HD if you are using it. Again, this program is great. Even though I haven't tried a recovery yet, I'm sure it will work.

"Great freeware!"

June 08, 2006  |  By vsiaq

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

Really good. Fast and reliable. It takes me around 30 minutes to back up a big drive.

I can't believe it's free. :D

Cons

It'd be even better if we can specify the size of each part, instead of 600MB by default.

"Excellent.. Just Excellent"

March 19, 2006  |  By [{xx_rasengan_xx}]

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 1.12

Pros

DriveImage XML is an amazing !!!FREE!!! program that easily (and quickly) backs up your hard drive, fully. I was impressed by the options it had, such as Drive-to-Drive --- amazing for a free program. However; it may be a *little* bit hard to configure... you must read all the directions carefully --- check habibbijan's guide at habibbijan.com/guides/driveimage2.php for a great description.

Cons

No cons as I can see -- However, if anyone'd like to reply, I'd like to know if Drive-to-Drive actually formats the drive and restores operating system on the subject drive... Anyway... DOWNLOAD IT! It's not a waste of your time, at all.
