DoubleKiller searches for duplicate files by comparing any combination of name, size, modification date, and content. You can exclude files or limit the scan to files matching masks like .MPG, files in a particular file size range or files with certain attributes, like hidden or system files. When the scan is finished a list containing all duplicates found is displayed and you can manually or automatically select the files to be removed.
The result list can be sorted and exported to a textfile readable by both humans and spreadsheet applications. DoubleKiller is a stand-alone executable that does not need to be installed, just extracted and run, and does not alter the system in any way without the user's prior permission.

Pros
after looking at a load of programs I have found that doublekiller does just what you want. you want to get rid of duplicate files and save some hard disk space. So you can do this by just checking for identicle file names and sizes or you can be more detailed and use checksums to see if any files content is actually the same. Its quick to scan and straight forward to choose which duplicate to delete. delivered in a tidy and intruitive user interface. Nice one :)

This tiny little program finds with great accuracy duplicate files, even if they have different names (via checksum and size) or dates. It worked beautifully for me - I just saved hours of tedious work. All the necessary options are there, it works very fast, comfortable and reliable. I just love it!
Cons
Some basic computer knowledge is required, e.g. not suitable for DAU's (Duemmster anzunehmender User).

Powerful and simple. Just download, unzip and run the .exe. Nothing to install. Near perfect filtering. Runs very fast and handled the 60GB of digital images on my #2 HDD in about 15 minutes. Do take care to select the Options tab and select names, sizes, dates and the CRC checksum options. This will virtually guarantee that no non-dupe files are loaded in the file review window. Also try to use the option to ONLY check specific filetypes such as mp3's or .jpg's. Even as effecient as it is, it still takes a lot longer to check .tif's. Note that this program also has the ability to copy the duplicates that it finds to a directory as well as deleting the dupes. I used the "Check the last Dupe" option and it manged to remove over 5000 dupes from my system in about 15 minutes.
Cons
The only improvements I can recommend would be :
1) Make the program installable so that it has an .ini to retain settings.
2) Directory filtering to block such directories as C:\Windows would be a good idea.
3) An option to delete 0 byte directories if all files in it are deleted.

1st of all it is free! 2nd small in size (couuld have been develope thru assembly language). 3rd it quick and easy to use.

it's free and ok for pic files, has extensive help...BUT...read the cons.

I don't recommend this for cleaning C:\, "which dupekiller doesn't either unless advanced," of dupes if you're advanced or not. If you are an advanced user who knows the files, then you would simply know to leave the files alone that dupekiller finds so it would be of little use. Most of the files that it found were not the same date, or checksums and had different extensions even though selected, but still picked as dupes. It seemed to go mostly by names no matter what options you choose. By the way, i picked MyDocuments along with scan sub folders, ... i purposly put dupes in my folders, all over them. Guess what,dupekiller didn't find anything, until i scanned the specific folder. Which i can't scan say, my folder,"clouds" if "Mydocuments" is in the list. It tells me i would have already scanned this if the "scan subfolders" is selected. Which of course with my experiment, i know to be false because it didn't do it's job. Also, in one pic folder, "Ancients", it picked one pic and one ico file, i still had to manually go through and make sure the files were right so i found myself asking just what good this program is. This would make a great "file finder", due to it's quickness of finding the files, not dupefinder.

Great! This works! It found so much crap I thought I had got rid of long ago, I chose the options first and let it check only files I was certain were ok to delete, plus it asks you to be certain you want it to do what it does, and does well!
So if you want to clean your files in comfort, this is the way to do it.
Not a single problem!

Beware, for if you delete duplicates in program folders, you will have problems. Exclude C:\Program Files unless you are experienced.
