"Excellent .. does job very, very well"

    March 2, 2011  |   By johnlove

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 6.2.2

    Pros

    ease of use

    Cons

    none that I cansee

    Summary

I use this all the time and always works.

After a short while, I discovered that Option-clicking on one of the hierarchical arrows expands all arrows. Note that if you want the printed version to show all contents of every sub-folder, then this is what you must do prior to printing because the printed copy will show the contents of only those folders which show on your computer monitor.

    "Trusty application for years"

    July 30, 2008  |   By laptopleon

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 5.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It's true that 4.2.2 had a few quirks and it's also true that this app is often updated, but 'daily' is a little exaggerated.. usually about once every 3 or 4 months and you can always choose to ignore updates or even opt not to check at all for updates.

The basics of DiskCatalogMaker havn't changed for years, but every now and then there is something extra added, like the iTunesque 'CoverFlow' feature, which really makes it nice to look at what already is a fast and stable tool.

I've used it for ages and it is still fast when you throw 250+ disks at it. It still opens in seconds, while it contains over 1.500.000 items.

"A waste of time, paper & effort"

    May 24, 2007  |   By Diks Toosl

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 4.2.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Not perfect, but okay, until I printed the list.

No matter ehat I do, I cannot make the list print in a way that will fit on a single sheet...and NO I don't mean lengthwise - it prints 2 pages per screen-full, ignores the paper size, ignores the font size, ignores everything I tell it & does exactly what it wants, which is apparently to waste hundreds of sheets of paper & who-knows-how-much toner, leaving me with a completely useless result.

I will never use this program again, nor will I use anything else by this author.

"Love this program, but one little problem..."

    April 24, 2007  |   By pwoodson

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 4.2.2b1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I used this recently to catalog my whole CD & DVD-R collection, a job that was long overdue. Works very well, with one problem:

The "Find" feature will not find words that you have added to the Disc's name after scanning them. I.e. you add the word "Priority" to a Disc's Name in the catalog for better searching, only to find that a search for discs with "Priority" in the name will NOT turn up the ones you changed. What is the point of being able to modify the Titles if searching them won't turn up anything you modified?

    Anyone find a workaround?...

Otherwise, great little program. Very useful.

Excellent program! Fast, gets the job done. Out of hundreds of CDs and DVDs, I had 2 old CDR's that were giving faulty file sizes, and reported the bug. The developer was prompt at fixing the problem.

    "Good but needs some work."

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 3.5.5b5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It would be very helpful if it auto ejected media as you catalog. At the moment it couldn't be clumsier because to have it recognise inserted media you need to be in the program where you can't cmd E to eject. It even requires you to click OK for every media or manually drag it onto the catalog.

I lost a large and tediously accumulated catalog because it does NOT save as you go.

To edit volume names, it forces you to select, get info and then be careful not to hit the customary enter or return when finished because these actually insert a return in the name.

It will not work with CDs inserted in an external FW drive.

It can be extremely slow cataloging a volume with a large number of files on a volume.

On the positive side I do like the look of the program and it allows name changing, which DiskRecall my previous favorite did not allow.

DiskRecall was brilliantly fast (near instantanious for a CD) )but never made it to OSX.

    "Used this for years"

    June 28, 2005  |   By tmcdanel

    Version: DiskCatalogMaker X 3.5.5b2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Good for what it does. I always have one specific improvement recommendation:

When i "find" a file with OSX Finder, I can click the "+" and add a second "name contains" criterion. If i put "Epson" in the first "name contains" field and "driv" in the second "name contains" field, it returns a file list that includes: "Epson driver", "Epson cx4600 driver installer", "Driving lessons by Epson".... This is a very handy feature because i often cannot remember the exact file name and syntax. DCM needs this facility in it's search. If i have to find a particular Mac OS installer i come up with many hits but never includes both "MacOS install" and "Mac OS install" and "MacOSX install" without searching for each individually. Try searching for files that begin with "Mac" and you will go nuts.

But, searching the results of a search DOES work now. Thanks. Which maybe compensates for the need i just described. Wish i had discovered this a while ago.

In any case, many thanks to the developer for a good reliable utility. I have way too many files archived and disks catalog to switch to anything better, so make a good improvement in v4, charge for the update, and i and others will probably shake loose some more change.

    Cheers.
