Easily monitor changes to select folders with this handy freeware, but some may find the included e-mail notification difficult to implement. DirGuard's Vista-skinned interface is a snap to learn and makes selecting folders just as easy.
Program usage is a simple set-and-forget system. Quickly choose which folders you want to monitor for any additions, deletions, or changed files. The program's notification options are all helpful. If you're always in front of your system, you can choose the quiet but effective windows tray pop-up message. Setting the sound to play on changes is easy and useful for systems in your room but not at your desk. Our favorite was e-mail notification. Setting the proper mail server may be a bit difficult for those unfamiliar with SMTP, but most intermediate users should be able to figure it out quickly enough.
Our only concern was with the monitoring schedule. Setting the interval is easy enough, but you're limited to choices of 30 seconds, and one, five, 10, or 30 minutes. An option to restart the interval after each e-mail notification would have been helpful. All in all, this freeware is a helpful tool for system administrators looking for a simple solution to their monitoring needs.
