Convoluted operation and odd failures mar this keyboard remapping suite. Dev-Labs Keyboard Remapper's professional-looking interface appears to have everything you'll need to remap your keys. The first problem you'll face is the application's poor Help manual. After finding that the application doesn't actually install despite the publisher's misleading terminology, novices will play with the app a few minutes and quit in irritation.

Dev-Labs Keyboard Remapper is a pair of applications that edit and utilize keyboard maps. Keyboard.exe pulls the heavy load and allows users to edit keyboard maps. Well, not always gracefully, and rarely cleanly. Testers found the editor's operation confusing at first. This isn't an app you'll pick up without the manual. That's a shame since the manual isn't good. After a few false starts you'll find the method to change keys, which is basically a drag-and-drop process to replace a key with one of the other displayed keys. You can also build macros onto keys through a multistep process.

Unfortunately, we found that the altered keyboards failed to perform more often than not. Even simple efforts to disable the Caps Lock key failed. MiniKbd.exe is the program component that loads and utilizes new layouts. The app makes it easy to change layouts with a mouse-click. However, toolbar icons to display Scroll Lock, Caps Lock, and Number Lock indicators all failed on our test systems.

Dev-Labs Keyboard Remapper appears to make the right choices. As a pair of executables, it doesn't install in your system, and isn't a memory hog, but the app is difficult to operate and undependable. There are many programs in the genre that are a better fit.

Publisher's description

From Dev-Labs :

Keyboard Remapper is a shareware utility that allows you to modify your keyboard as you want and to use hot keys as well. This utility is just like a wizard - you can change your current Windows layout, have much more freedom using your keyboard, use some peculiar symbols which are hard to find. Even the special keys like "Alt", "Control", "Win", and "Shift" can be changed. Not to mention that Keyboard Remapper can make a difference between the left and right "Win"-keys, for example. You may assign macros to keys as well.
