Desktop Sidebar provides you with instant access to the information you most desire by grabbing data from your PC and the Internet. The result is a dynamic visual display you configure and control. You make this possible by choosing from among a wide selection of information conduits (MS Outlook, toolbars, newsfeeds), called panels. Fully customizable, Desktop Sidebar allows you to dock these panels to the edge of the screen or arrange them anywhere on your desktop as you wish. All panels are configurable with a number of specific options. With hundreds of skins available on our Web site and an easy-to-use Skin Editor, you can freely change the appearance of Desktop Sidebar to suit your tastes. Everything is right there for you to open without having to look for. Well designed and easy to use. A little hint: once you download, go to the plug-ins and get some like the IP viewer, it shows you IP address and will enable you to ping yourself. This way you can drive Norton Internet Security crazy, you are attacking yourself!
Cons
It want's memory. It will eat it up. This will put your system at a crawl if you don't have alot of memory to spare.

The calendar has to be added. Docing dynamically in the right sidebar has to be initiated by using the HIDE item (right click first). After restaring the calendar doesn't work.

Got a good analog clock, the mail checker and the search is very handy. The image slide show is very nice. It works in all!
Cons
Its a bit of resource hog..and the media player doesnt work well..I would reqest pannels for messengers like Trillian which is used widely.

Includes many "panels" which show information varying from your IP address to your emails/appointments to news to anything else you can possibly think of, all in an always visible place (although you can set it to auto-hide in order to conserve screen space). If a panel you want does not yet exist on the site, you can request it in the active community forums, where panel developers will see it and try to implement your idea.
Desktop Sidebar supports skinning, which means you can change the look of the app to suit your needs and compose a beautiful desktop. A nice collection of skins made by the community can be found on the site, but if none suit your needs, the included Skin Editor will help you make your own skin or tweak existing ones to your liking.
Additionally, I am a programmer. Developing panels for Desktop Sidebar is pretty easy, and it also supports creating panels using script-languages.
