After buying a new computer, iTunes users find that many of their songs can't be played even if they are on an iPod. DeTune for Mac allows users to keep and manage songs on iPods, even if they would be deleted via iTunes.
DeTune for Mac, with a file size under 3MB, is quick to download and install. As it lacks instructions and visible support, some less experienced users may find the interface unintuitive. Starting the program without an iPod connected leads to a graphic telling the user to connect one. After this is done, the program reads the iPod quickly. The program performs few functions outside of reading and listing songs on an iPod, but after all, it is free. The process for transferring songs from the iPod back to the computer hard drive is not clearly spelled out, which could be a problem for novice Mac users. The menus are fairly well designed to appear and operate like those in iTunes, with each song having a check box next to it so it can be selected. DeTune is also supposed to be capable of moving large files between computers via an iPod, an additional feature one would not expect in a freeware program.
DeTune for Mac's design, performance, and price tag of zero make it a good option for those who want to keep their songs after purchasing a new computer.

It's a very easy to use select, drag to folder program. I just copy all my music on my iphone to my mac in minutes.
Just select the files you want to copy, drag them to a folder in your finder and DONE! -

Completely free (as far as I can tell) and dead simple to use. I tried to use the 1,000 song trial version of Senuti first to copy 1/3 of my music from an iPod that was synced to my old (and defunct) computer. Wish I would have gone straight to DeTunes...was a waste of time to even bother with Senuti and now I'm trying to remember what I already copied so as not to have duplicates. Yay for DeTunes!

Wasn't entirely obvious to me at first that all you needed to do was drag and drop; maybe DeTunes could have a pop-up upon installation pointing this out? But that's really not much of a con.

Easy to simply drag and drop files from your iphone to your Mac. You can then easily add them back into iTunes. I had music on my old iphone that had never found their way into iTunes - thought they were lost. So easy to do...

DeTune seamlessly helped me transfer my tunes from my phone back to my new drive (the old one died, hence my problem). Grateful to have saved them. Plus, I needed to get it done quickly to upgrade my iPhone. I really was surprised at how quickly it worked. It couldn't have been easier.
Cons
It breaks your song list a bit funny in some cases. Other than that, no other glitches so far.

Pros
It gets your music and gets you into the file system so you can also grab other items like photos. It's extremely easy to use and the author gets back to you in emails very quickly. The fact that it's free is also wonderful.
Cons
It can't pull off the music with playlists and the same for photo albums, but nothing else does either. So I guess it's not really a problem with the software, just something I wish could be done.
Summary
This is the must have, go to app, to get things off of your iPad, or other devices. It couldn't be easier to use and is very Apple like in design and interface. It just works!
