Daxaif is an audio compression program that uses a newly patented lossless compression method to give reversible compression of AIFF and WAV files. Daxaif handles both 8- and 16-bit sound files and can handle up to 255 channels. The compressed file format allows convenient selection of an audio passage for listening or expansion back to AIFF format. Daxaif also features decent compression speed--up to 2X real-time compression of CD stereo on a 100-MHz PowerPC. This version can play 9-15 bit files, but it cannot generate them.

Summary
I've used DaxAIF on every AIF file on my hard drive. DaxAIF is simple to use, very stable, and roars along on my 333MHz iMac. The only quibbles I have with this program is how the equaliser is a little bit difficult to program and clear, and how Dax will return an error if it can't add the .mov.dax extension when importing from Quicktime. Dax is the perfect program for archiving audio files without losing quality. It's even backward compatible with 1.0!
