With only a setup glitch, this proxy filter is effective and moderately easy to configure. Cyclope Internet Filtering Proxy's interface is browser-based, and that's where we had our setup problem. We couldn't get Internet Explorer to open the interface, but Firefox fired it right up.
Novices are not expected to install this application, though the online help does a great job of explaining all the steps. We quickly installed the proxy, but setting the rules will take even experienced users some time to master.
Filtering is accomplished through nine managers that cover URLs, keywords, archive type, applications, audio/video files, Flash, custom extensions, and incoming or outgoing cookies. Each is individually configured and most have numerous options. However, you can easily set the proxy to send you traffic reports daily, weekly, or monthly. You can group computers to follow different rule sets. Computer-savvy parents can set their machines to full access while restricting their children to a white list of specific URLs.
Using a proxy sometimes slows down Web site response, but we didn't find this problem on our small test network. The 15-day demo is more than enough time to put this proxy through its paces. Intermediate to advanced users, parents, and small-office administrators looking to restrict Internet access will find this proxy effective and flexible.
