Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. At least you do with the pricey CyberLink PowerDVD, a nifty video player that combines ease of use, top-notch performance, and an outstanding feature set.

The compact and handy interface comes in several flavors, including a miniature version with minimal playback controls. The context menu is customizable, and the program automatically resumes playback from the last point you viewed. You can bookmark interesting scenes and move subtitles so they don't interfere with the picture. Video-enhancement options include color profiles and Eagle Vision technology, which makes the picture brighter and more natural. CyberLink PowerDVD also has tools for improving sound on headphones or two-speaker systems. You can enable a different parental control level for each of your kids. It also supports Blu-ray discs and picture-in-picture displays.

What's not to like? OK, the price: $69.95 might seem steep, but you're getting a lot for your money. Also, Windows Vista users have complained about bugs since Version 7, so caveat emptor if you're on a Vista-32 machine.

    "The best, along with WinDVD"

by emperordarius on June 25, 2008

Pros: Anyone should know it today. PowerDVD and WinDVD are the best for viewing DVDs.

Has a lot of founctions, renders colors correctly, it simply perfect for DVDs, although it cannot really be used as a video player.

Cons: Cannot be used as a video player.

    "Updated to bloatware"

by jpeni on June 25, 2008

Pros: PowerDVD 7 was the latest evolution of the world acclaimed DVD software program that offers maximum video and audio playback entertainment on the PC.

Cons: PowerDVD 8 adds software bloat from unwanted features like MoovieLive, MovieRemix and has many annoying limitations that version 7 did NOT have:

    a) PDVD 8 Player size restriction. It's relatively huge in vertical/horizontal size

    b) With PDVD 8, you're forced to see a "Resume Movie" every time.

    c) PowerDVD 8 has only one big ugly skin. PowerDVD 7.3 has some nice discrete hi-tech skins to download.

Why can't the software developers just add new features and bloatware as OPTIONS and not screw up a good working old version?

    "good looks, high quality"

by thwartedthong on July 27, 2008

Pros: A lack of proprietry software on my new Asus x70sr to enable the blue ray drive to work led me looking. This one seems to be the only one commercially available at the moment. I would add that lots of sites are offering this software with the keygen crack- be warned! a lot contain viruses, that said I begrudge paying for something my computer supplier should have been supplying anyway. I doubt if i,ll pay when the trial expires. It does play blue ray brilliantly and the screen refresh rate is far better than standard dvds, crisp colour rendition and very smooth although this might be due to the ATI High def graphics card my PC has.

Cons: When running Vista 32 home premium with a dual core T5500 processor and 3 gig of ram, the statements given with the guidance notes are correct- even with these specs you only want to be running this solo- try anything else and it will freeze up so dont expect to multi-task. Also you want to be loading the DVD after the software has been running for a couple of minutes dont try starting up power DVD when a disc is already loaded because 2 times out of 3 the software froze. I expect it needs more development for the Vista O/S and will be more stable further down the line.
