CNET Editors' review
Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. At least you do with the pricey CyberLink PowerDVD, a nifty video player that combines ease of use, top-notch performance, and an outstanding feature set.
The compact and handy interface comes in several flavors, including a miniature version with minimal playback controls. The context menu is customizable, and the program automatically resumes playback from the last point you viewed. You can bookmark interesting scenes and move subtitles so they don't interfere with the picture. Video-enhancement options include color profiles and Eagle Vision technology, which makes the picture brighter and more natural. CyberLink PowerDVD also has tools for improving sound on headphones or two-speaker systems. You can enable a different parental control level for each of your kids. It also supports Blu-ray discs and picture-in-picture displays.
What's not to like? OK, the price: $69.95 might seem steep, but you're getting a lot for your money. Also, Windows Vista users have complained about bugs since Version 7, so caveat emptor if you're on a Vista-32 machine.

"Usable but not for price"
Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 8
Cons
Turns volume to 100 percent on load, why?? Skips around at random (reproduced on many different machines). Too expensive for the additional features.

"Outstanding Sound, Great Flexibility, Inconsistent Reliability"
Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 8
Pros
The sound, and how you can configure the software to fit your sound devices for optimum, high-quality audio output is fantastic. The software is highly customizable and can play a variety of files. It also plays DVDs from different regions with outstanding audio & video quality.
Cons
I have experienced problems with consistent reliability of performance under Vista 32. I have had this issue with both versions 7 and 8's fully loaded releases. Basically, at times, when you hit Play, or Fast Forward, the software freezes, becomes unresponsive or simply shuts down. This is very frustrating.
