"Installs virus!"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2f
Pros
It's a good program by itself.
Cons
Installs a malware called OpenCandy, which is often described as virus in many sources on the Internet. There's no way to choose to avoid it, as the EULA's for the main program and the virus are bundled in one and if you agree to accept the terms of one, you accept the virus installation automatically. Do not download it, download the portable version of CrystalDiskMark instead. It's free of infections and works fine.

"Buyer beware (didn't know you were buying anything?)"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2f
Pros
Great application, small and to the point. Just like a tool should be.
Cons
Installer bundles the following when you install:
- Extensions that auto install and re-enable when removed
- Unwanted toolbars
- Popup generating adware requiring manual removal
- Search engine and homepage hijacker (Conduit)Summary
I will never recommend use of these applications unless you can obtain an older version which is not bundled with such terribly invasive adware. Frankly, I never really trusted CNET downloads but this will cause me to recommend against using CNET when possible, and just downloading from the author's site or from another archive/mirror.
I will be checking all my other essential tools and making sure I have copies that don't have all this trash attached. I recommend anyone who uses small applications like this to keep a trusted copy backed up somewhere. -
"Installs an uninstallable toolbar"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2e
Pros
The application itself works fine and is simple. I used it to verify the read and write speeds of SDHC and SDXC cards. But beware...
Cons
A "entrusted search" toolbar is installed in the background and without permission; there is no opt-out step. It will take over your default search page as well, and did this in IE9 despite my having checked the option to prevent those very changes. After uninstalling the toolbar, the piece of crap is still in the list of search providers and will not allow a removal. Searching for a solution led me to the entrusted ourtoolbar website where they instruct you to reinstall the toolbar, reboot, and retry uninstallation. Unacceptable.
Summary
If I'd know the hassle the entrusted toolbar was going to cause, I would've downloaded one of the other disk benchmark apps. I would rather pay for software than have to put up with this crap. Would give it negative stars if I could.

"Bad Install Package for Great Utility"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2e
Pros
I've used Crystal apps for many years... Unfortunately, it has been a long time and I forgot that the author provides clean and free versions of the apps as well as AD-INFECTED releases of his apps.. If you head to his site and view Downloads, you will see that he clearly indicates which ones have OpenCandy, the ADWare with this installer, and which ones don't...
Do not install using this installer - it will install OpenCandy, which will in turn hijack your browsers and install additional adware applications on your system... New install of Windows 8 - infected within 30 mins of boot because I wanted to test my SSD... I've now spent 30+ mins removing everything OpenCandy installed and am still scanning with Panda, MalwareByes and Avast to ensure that I've got it all - UGH!
So, again, head to the author's site and get one of his packages that doesn't have "OpenCandy" next to it - just don't use this unless you really like adware installed on your machine :PCons
COMES WITH OpenCandy ADWare!!!
Will hijack every browser on your machine and install adware on your system (located in 5 folders on my machine - intentionally placing in multiple places to reduce removal, if you ask me...)Summary
Crystal* tools are great.. Generally do exactly what they say and do it well.. Unfortunately, author does release some installer packages (like the one linked here) that have OpenCandy AdWare with them... If you go to the author's site, you can download an alternative package that doesn't have OpenCandy and then you get a great utility without the mess..

"Great Benchmark tool for HD's"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2c
Pros
Comprehensive test but defaults are somewhat agressive and many many like to change them.
Cons
Bloatware is attached within the package. You must be warry and deselect its installation.

"The best free real-world test?"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1c
Pros
Easy to use.
Measures performance on small, medium and large files.
Measures both Read and Write performance.
Closer to real-world performance than either ATTO or free HD Tune.Cons
Generalized performance measurement rather than specific for your needs such as Home Theater PC, Productivity (MS Office, etc.) or Gaming.
Summary
Manufacturers of SSDs and regular hard disk drives (HDD for short) want to show the performance of their product in the most favorable way so they measure it under ideal conditions (ATTO benchmark) which tell you little about its true performance, rather like the MegaPixel (MP) ratings of digital cameras. These ideal conditions involve data or files that can be easily "compressed" whereas, on your computer, much of your data and files cannot be compressed, thus making your SSD or HDD work harder and return lower number results. How your chosen drive handles small file sizes of incompressible data (such as 4Kb to 64Kb) throughout the day is most relevant, but medium & large incompressible performance is useful for 3D gamers and for video & photo editing or copying big files from one drive to another. To see professional measurements of these real-world scenarios you can check out the combined "storagemark" results for many different drives at storagereviewdotcom. But for free and relatively quick measurement at home you'll be hard pressed to find a better test than CrystalDiskMark !! Things to remember when testing:
1. When the drive is nearly empty you get the best test result.
2. Don't have a bunch of other programs running while you're testing.
3. If the drive is an SSD, be sure to "Log off" (not Shutdown) for several hours before testing. SSDs have their own software which tunes up the performance when the computer is idle for awhile.
4. Restart your computer before testing.
6 year-old to 10 year-old drives will probably measure very slow compared to 2 year-old and newer drives, so replacing an old hard drive can make an older computer run everything noticeably faster, especially if you install an SSD instead of a regular HDD (maybe keep the old drive for storing all your photos, documents, videos, music, etc.). -
"Works on HD but not on my SD cards"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1b
Pros
Gave good results running tests on my hard drives, but will not complete the final test on any of my SD cards, which is what I wanted it for!!!
Cons
Hangs, forces me to crash the PC to get it to stop. Tried using task manager to no avail.
Summary
New download process sucks! Must now get your programs somewhere else. I guess all good things come to an end!

"Crystal DiskMark 3"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1b
Pros
I only installed the benchmarking utility,it is all i got ..
It is simple, no frills and i was confused by the other review with all the other stuff noted. (see cons)
It does a fairly good benchmark quietly, only options is (skins) which is a joke, you can pick a few odd colors for the cells to display.
But, there are a number of kinds of benchmarking tests to run and a few options on how that part functions.
I have limited understanding of all the read and write significance among all the breakdowns , so this is just fine for my needs. i get something i can compare to reviews by people who do know what they are doing. or claim to and i am satisfied.Cons
..i stopped using cnet 'secure' download because of the ambush ware technique. i found that if i wasnt careful, i got a 2nd or 3rd installation of something not listed...it is on a check page during the 3 or4 page cnet 'easy install' wizard .. if there is a direct install option i take it and use my computer's security system ...this is only a con on cnet's new ad supported so called secure download system.
i have no cons on the product. 1- i just dont know enough to be critical and it gives me a ballpark and frame of reference when comparing as noted in ProsSummary
I know it generates results which are similar to what i see in the reviews of drives , that is all i wanted. not much, but all i can use. i have a new ssd and i got very fast times so do not have to bother with all the craziness with not doing one thing and making sure i turn off another task or function, that were related to first gen ssds. mine works and i used the crystal disk mark to give me the peace of mind.....only it is not faster on anything but boot and shut down. no matter what the numbers say. i have used the monitoring crystal disk blue icon cousin for a couple of years and checked this one out with positive results.
I have no idea of the further capacity of the program to preform any other tasks or expand on the one i use . but my only goal for it was satisfied and done so with no hassles , only had to wait a couple of mins to complete. -
"Spyware/Adware"
Version: CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1a
Pros
There are no pros to adware.
Cons
MSSECES:WIN32/OPENCANDY. CNET says they tested, but they obviously didn't. It has adware, no question. Installs as soon as the file is downloaded - you don't even need to run the installer. Appears to keep installing as long as the file is on your PC
Summary
Frustrating that CNET would claim they tested it when the did not. Makes it very hard to trust CNET now.
