Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo aren't the only ones bringing more search power to consumer desktops. Copernic's Desktop Search tool makes it fast and easy to find documents, e-mails, and other files on local drives. Like other desktop search tools, it creates a searchable index of all the data on a computer's drives, and updates it every time a file is added, removed, or modified.
A left-side search column allows simple keyword queries and more refined searches based on file size, date, file type, or folder. Easy-to-read icons at the top of the screen let you limit searches by category, such as stored HTML pages, e-mail, and videos. The program is lightning-quick, displaying results as fast as you can type.
We especially like the Copernic Deskbar, a search window that appears in the Windows Taskbar and makes quick queries very handy. However, we would like an image viewer, and we wish the application's PowerPoint viewer could display graphics. Copernic comes with optional search toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Overall, Copernic offers an efficient way to search your PC, especially for multiple or large hard drives.
Publisher's description
From Copernic :Copernic Desktop Search brings a search engine right to your PC and allows you to instantly search files, e-mails, and e-mail attachments stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. The application executes subsecond searching of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, all popular music, picture, and video formats, contacts, the browser history, and Favorites. It features a seamlessly integrated previewer that instantly provides you with a view of the file or e-mail you're looking for. The previewer highlights all search terms and automatically scrolls to the first use of these terms in a document, eliminating the frustration of having to sort through endless text to pinpoint specific words. This latest version provides a more refined search experience thanks to performance optimizations, new customization options, user-interface improvements, and bug fixes.
Version 1.63 features indexing of OpenOffice.org (1.1 and 2.x) and StarOffice (7.x and 8.x) files. Toolbar now available for Firefox 1.5.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.63
Pros: nice idea (same as x1), interface, and toolbar to search anytime from taskbar if it was fully functional.
Cons: Only allows indexing certain file formats it picks for you, not all (so from me add MS Access files to the "tough luck" list from other users). Has never stopped indexing. It says it has indexed 100,000 plus files and 1.5 million plus keywords. What keywords? Again, ones they predefine, I guess we're all dummies and need smart people to choose them for us! And the index takes way too much disk space for 100,000 docs (almost 1 gig). I have way more files than that. And the searches I have done were slow despite a good system. Too bad, a tool like this for those with lots of files could be useful.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.63
"I keep on going back to this search program"
Pros: More unobtrusive than the other search engines. I find it doesn't interfere with my work. Every now and then I try Yahoo Desktop search for the additional features, and then uninstall it and re-install Copernic Desktop Search. I tried Google Desktop search once, but don't like desktop searches returned in web format.
Cons: Wish it could search within Zip files, and that there were more add-ons

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.63
"King of all Desktop search programs"
Pros: I have been using this program since last two years, and also tried , installed & uninstalled some other similiar programs both freeware+shareware. The programs which impressed me were copernic & google desktop search where i preffered to stucked with copernic. Coz
It uses resources only when it indexes files for the first time after installation after that it doesn't use more resources. Search results are appeared as soon as we finish the type the word for search.Files indexing is lightning fast. It took 6-8 minutes to complete indexing for all files sized of 14-15GB .
Where other programs (costing 50$+) refused to install & / or index files coz i have had some encryption/hiding files programs installed on my PC. This is a winner. I guess every one should have this piece of software Go for newer version which is v1.7 build 974
Cons: Money can't buy this
