Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo aren't the only ones bringing more search power to consumer desktops. Copernic's Desktop Search tool makes it fast and easy to find documents, e-mails, and other files on local drives. Like other desktop search tools, it creates a searchable index of all the data on a computer's drives, and updates it every time a file is added, removed, or modified.
A left-side search column allows simple keyword queries and more refined searches based on file size, date, file type, or folder. Easy-to-read icons at the top of the screen let you limit searches by category, such as stored HTML pages, e-mail, and videos. The program is lightning-quick, displaying results as fast as you can type.
We especially like the Copernic Deskbar, a search window that appears in the Windows Taskbar and makes quick queries very handy. However, we would like an image viewer, and we wish the application's PowerPoint viewer could display graphics. Copernic comes with optional search toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Overall, Copernic offers an efficient way to search your PC, especially for multiple or large hard drives.
Publisher's description
From Copernic :Copernic Desktop Search brings a search engine right to your PC and allows you to instantly search files, e-mails, and e-mail attachments stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. The application executes subsecond searching of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, all popular music, picture, and video formats, contacts, the browser history, and Favorites. It features a seamlessly integrated previewer that instantly provides you with a view of the file or e-mail you're looking for. The previewer highlights all search terms and automatically scrolls to the first use of these terms in a document, eliminating the frustration of having to sort through endless text to pinpoint specific words. This latest version provides a more refined search experience thanks to performance optimizations, new customization options, user-interface improvements, and bug fixes.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.6
Pros: I love the ability to customize where Copernic searches.
I use Copernic for a specific project that resides in one folder on my computer.
I have no reason to search my whole hard or all types of files.
The flexibility to choose where and what to index is a strong point to me.
I also like the Copernic toolbar residing on my taskbar. Simple. Easy to use.
I also like the fact I have the ability for it to remember the last type of search I performed.
This tool has saved me countless hours of futile searches.
Wonderful tool!
Cons: I allow it to index on the fly. When doing so, if I create a large file or move a large file into my indexed folder, it can bog the system down while indexing large files. It's possible it's my laptop's performance, but less CPU usage would be nice when indexing.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.6
Pros: Does what it's supposed to.
Nice interface.
Search toolbar integrates nicely with the taskbar.
More customizable than others.
Search categories.
Speedy searches.
Supports Firefox history & bookmarks.
DOES NOT take up lots of resources.
Cons: Doesn't show search results from all categories at once.
Not as fast as X1.
I have a 2.13GHz Centrino and a packed 60GB HD and initial indexing took under an hour. As for previous reviewers boasted having 2-3GHz systems but had slow scan results or took up too much resources? Maybe because their hard drive was ONLY 5-20GB!!! What's the point of having a fast computer w/such a small HD? Just imagine how little RAM they must have too. Only inexperienced users would have such a setup. So if they're having problems, it's their computer, not the program. If you don't believe me, search google for reviews from experts, Copernic is rated more highly most of the time and ALL of them says it doesn't take up too much resources.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.6
Pros: I like the email search
Cons: This thing searches for your string inside the file, in the filename, and in the path. That would be great if you could TURN OFF some of that. Example: I'm looking for where in my php code I referenced "Apache server". The results show me EVERY php file that's in the apache directory, because "Apache" is in the path. And, if you want to search for the exact phrase, and put quotes around it, nothing is found because the fool thing searches for the quotes as part of the string itself. Without the quotes it does an OR search. It is TOTALLY USELESS--unless you think narrowing down your search to about 2759 files on your hard drive is somehow useful.
This is a 1989-level searcher. I'm off to try GDS. I can't believe they wrote the search function so stupidly.
