Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo aren't the only ones bringing more search power to consumer desktops. Copernic's Desktop Search tool makes it fast and easy to find documents, e-mails, and other files on local drives. Like other desktop search tools, it creates a searchable index of all the data on a computer's drives, and updates it every time a file is added, removed, or modified.
A left-side search column allows simple keyword queries and more refined searches based on file size, date, file type, or folder. Easy-to-read icons at the top of the screen let you limit searches by category, such as stored HTML pages, e-mail, and videos. The program is lightning-quick, displaying results as fast as you can type.
We especially like the Copernic Deskbar, a search window that appears in the Windows Taskbar and makes quick queries very handy. However, we would like an image viewer, and we wish the application's PowerPoint viewer could display graphics. Copernic comes with optional search toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Overall, Copernic offers an efficient way to search your PC, especially for multiple or large hard drives.
Publisher's description
From Copernic :Copernic Desktop Search brings a search engine right to your PC and allows you to instantly search files, e-mails, and e-mail attachments stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. The application executes subsecond searching of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, all popular music, picture, and video formats, contacts, the browser history, and Favorites. It features a seamlessly integrated previewer that instantly provides you with a view of the file or e-mail you're looking for. The previewer highlights all search terms and automatically scrolls to the first use of these terms in a document, eliminating the frustration of having to sort through endless text to pinpoint specific words. This latest version provides a more refined search experience thanks to performance optimizations, new customization options, user-interface improvements, and bug fixes.
Version 1.5 build 642 adds Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora e-mail search; smart indexing of network drives.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.5 build 642
"Great Idea! Computer unstable after installing"
Pros: Love that it works on W98, since others require XP. It's a useful tool to find things quickly. I love the concept and the execution when it's working and not causing my system to lockup.
Support has been good about answering emails.
Cons: I installed on a variety of computer types includeing W98SE and XP. It seems that in each case the systems became unstable afterwards. One W98 machine will no longer shut down. Another has an application that can not invoke with Copernic in background. My Spool32 crashes when printing from Outlook with Copernic running, but resumes fine when I kill it.
So, if Copernic can figure out why their software causes system instability, this would be a fanstastic find.

"Great product, but interferes with Outlook backup"
Pros: A fabulous and fast find utility. Preview pane for documents of most useful types (e.g., no need to open Outlook to view Outlook mail messages found by Copernic).
Cons: Running on a Windows 98 machine seemed to be unstable during initial indexing.
On an XP machine, Copernic interferes with backup of Outlook files. Had to shut Copernic down to copy/backup .pst files (pausing indexing is not enough). It took a lot of searching to figure this out, so I'm sharing it here.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 1.5 build 642
Pros: Quick and efficient; great interface. There is a preview for many file types, so no need to open the file in the native application.
Cons: Does not index text in TIF files. Those of us who use TIF for document scans should better try Lookout or something else.

"Excellent idea, terrible execution"
Pros: Great organizational structure for making searches and showing results. Definitely better than Google desktop search in that regard. I really wanted this program to work, because I do lots of Internet research.
Cons: Before the indexing could finish the program caused my computer to shut down. One time the computer went into high speed, making lots of noise (like a vacum cleaner) and then the screen went blank. Also, during indexing, it took it long periods of time to index some simple PDF files (always getting hung up on the same ones) and it kept starting over, indexing the same files repeatedly. I had to unplug my computer to get it going again. I experimented several times, and each time a system restore ended the problem of shutdowns. This was just too frightening so I gave up.
