Publisher's Description
From Copernic:
Copernic Desktop Search brings a search engine right to your PC and allows you to instantly search files, e-mails, and e-mail attachments stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. The application executes subsecond searching of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, all popular music, picture, and video formats, contacts, browser history, and favorites.
It features a seamlessly integrated previewer that instantly provides you with a view of the file or e-mail youre looking for. The previewer highlights all search terms and automatically scrolls to the first use of these terms in a document, eliminating the frustration of having to sort through endless text to pinpoint the words you are searching for. This latest version provides a more refined search experience thanks to performance optimizations, new customization options, user-interface improvements, and fixes.

"I love this app!"
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.7.0.8
Pros
fast, comprehensive search. Pro version doesn't spam up your desktop. Who has time and patience to wait for windows explorer. Also, you can really get specific with keyword and file type searches
Cons
the indexing takes a little effort to conquer
Summary
If you have to sift through zillions of folders for obscure documents this is the app for you!

"Adds advertisements to EVERYTHING"
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.7.0.8
Pros
Did find the files I was looking for.
Cons
After I installed, ads started popping up everywhere, Reddit, newspaper columns, comment fields, etc. It talked about an ad-free version if you paid but I assumed this meant ads when you were using the software, not in my entire browsing experience. STAY AWAY!
Summary
Malware infected, unless you don't mind ads in everything you read on-line.

"I'm staying away - Once bitten, once shy..."
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.7.0.8
Pros
having read the warnings, there's no way I'm installing this. In theory, it's a great tool - I was looking for sommething to replace the as yet to be beaten goole search that you lauchnched in WinXP by double clicking on the Ctrl key... Nothing has ever bettered it - Unless you can PLEASE tell me otherwise.... I installed this on the WinXpside of my Mac (through Parallels) and (continued on "Cons"!...
Cons
Installaiton on WinXP made mw wonder why on earth CNET had given this product a thumbs up... It certainly did nothing ueful for me.
Summary
I still long for google search to be replaced.... If you know of a good seacrh engine, please speak up.

"Supports Indexing Network drives ."
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.7
Pros
- Supports indexing and searching network drives.
- Simple interface
- Easy to useCons
- Not very context sensitive like google or Microsoft desktop search when given multiple words for search.
- This has a "near" keyword that makes the searches of multiple words more context sensitive , but this is not the default behavior like other search engines do. You have to type "near" every time to get context sensitive search results.
- Once it starts indexing it doesn't pause to free up resources quiet nicely when you do other activitiesSummary
I use this mainly because Microsoft Desktop search in windows7 does not support network drives.
I use Windows 7 in a Parallels desktop environment (inside Mac) as a virtual system and all the data on the Mac is presented inside Windows 7 as network drives. This is the only Search engine that supports the network drives also and I am happy to use Copernic where other search engines fail. -
"Molasses in the Arctic - Took over Outlook pst Files"
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.6.1.7
Pros
Easy to install. Pretty screen.
Cons
This App took over my Outlook .pst files and would not allow me to access my mail accounts until I uninstalled it. It took three days to do the initial indexing - I do have five big hard drives but it wasn't worth the wear and tear on my hardware: i5-2500k water-cooled and O/C'ed to 4800 --- 8GB RAM --- WD VelociRaptor as C:. Copernic ran about as fast as Agent 6 and/or molasses in the Arctic. It failed to find numerous files. 'Search Everything' is MUCH faster, less intrusive and finds EVERYTHING. Lastly, it included lots of advertisements.
Summary
Don't install this if you use MS Outlook 2010.

"Love it. Have had no problems with it."
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.6.1.7
Pros
It's great for finding stuff on my computer when I can't remember where I put it. I also use it for tracking down photos. I've been using Copernic products for many years, & never been disappointed.
Cons
None that I can think of.

"Desktop Search is so 8-bit Who bothers with it?"
Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.6.1.7
Pros
The search is quick and effective and has a slew of features that after 30 days you'll be asked to pay for that you can get for free from lesser known desktop search apps like 'Everything". Copernic has a very nice interface while "Everything' is rather bare and Old Mother Hubbbard. But old Mother Hubbard does a job equal to Copernic without the nice orange dashboard and and does it totally free. What is there to say about a moribund tech segment that Google abandoned long ago that no one really cares about.
Finally, in this day and age it says a lot when an applications like Copernic don't bombard you to download their gizmos, their latest status symbol du jour among internet tech firms with stuff like their very own "in house" tool bar, offers to make themselves your home page, default search tool and a whole host of offers that puts Amazon to shame. To their credit, Copernic doesn't bother with ancillary items that might take their collective minds off desktop search technologyCons
I defy anyone at CNet to remove Copernic Desktop search in under an hour and i happen to be rather sophisticated in these things. The average user is going to take a lot longer if at all.
And that's because of all the apps I've ever downloaded Copernic has the oddest marketing strategy that instead of investing their R&D in making a better product what they do instead is develop c myriad of ways, to make removing Copernic as arduous as possible.
I've seen this phenomena become more and more ubiquitous. The effort companies go to subvert your legitimate desire to
remove their product from your machine for whatever reason has reached epidemic proportions.
what does it say about a company that subverts all your attempts to remove their program? Does it engender any good will? Does it not have the diametrically opposite effect, that the more difficult a program is at having it removed, the more you're going to be determined to remove no matter what?Summary
Any company that defies its clients wishes , stymies every possible attempt to have the software removed first of all, demonstrates a terrible lack of confidence in their own product, which speaks loudly as to the efficacy or lack thereof of the product itself, that ultimately if they make it really difficult to remove the product is all the ore reason to get rid of it as quickly as possible.
Lastly, I've been a member of CNet for several years while working for a financial firm on Wall Street and despite the frankness and straight-talk of some of my reviews, they never made the light of day to appear at your forums And neither do I believe for one nano-moment that this review will meet a fate any differently. -
