Editors' review

Combofix is a freeware utility that scans your PC deeply for spyware and malware, especially in combinations. It's a powerful tool that can remove stubborn infections but also delete files you need, if you let it, so inexperienced users who run Combofix without expert guidance do so at their own risk. Used properly, it can clean your PC much more deeply than typical tools, free or not, and not just of malware but other junk, too. It finishes with a detailed log that reports each step.

Combofix is portable freeware that runs when you click its extracted program file. We disabled our antivirus and firewall software, as Combofix recommends. Most programs advise you to close everything before you install them, but Combofix means it, and it'll tell you if an open window or running process needs to end before it can proceed. The program also automatically backs up your settings and creates a System Restore point, which is reassuring.

Combofix is mostly automatic in operation. It scanned our system and started deleting files at a rapid pace. A look at the scrolling log reassured us: Combofix was throwing out hundreds of tiny JPEGs left over from an uninstalled app. Other cleaners (which shall remain nameless) had missed them, and we were pleased to see them go. Most scans take less than 10 minutes, but infected PCs may take much longer; ours was clean, thankfully. Finishing requires a reboot. Things seemed to load and run faster; an extra benefit of this deep cleaner.

"Horrible. It starts deleting files without asking if ok"

    August 24, 2014   |   By cesarinternational

    Version: Combofix 14.8.21.1

    Pros

The description by Download.com might be correct, but I did not reach that point.

    Cons

It creates a System Restore Point and then starts checking your computer in a Windows DOS window, then it starts deleting folders and files without asking. That should not be the way such a program should work. It should indicate what is wrong, what should be deleted and then ask the user for approval before deleting them. Once I noticed the deletions I used Ctrl Break twice to stop the procedure and exited the program. Then I did not have access to the Internet on any browser and several programs did not work anymore. The Control Panel utilities were not finding a reason why I was not being able to access the Internet. I did not trust the program's restore point and used the previous one. That brought my computer back to how my computer was at that point and time (4 days prior). I suggest not using this program and if you do then create your own System Restore Point and use it if something goes wrong. Maybe if I had not stopped the program then things would have been Ok.

    Summary

The way it works is definitely the way a program should work.

Correction: The way it works is definitely NOT the way a program should work.

    Updated on Aug 24, 2014

Upon start it tells you to turn off your antivirus programs and let it do its work. It is basically letting it do its job. It deleted Ammy, which is a remote control utility, a web page I saved and then it was going to delete more files. I was very concerned what else was going to delete without asking for my approval. Then since I stopped the utility then something went wrong and several programs did not work anymore including three browsers. The Windows utilities in the Control Panel were not able to fix that problem. Imagine yourself without the internet and the right tools to fix your PC. Luckily there is the Windows Restore Point.
