    "THIS is the one!"

    by mikeb5984 on April 27, 2007

Pros: Been using it since 2004 with over 300 DVD movies catalogued. What the editor's review neglected to tell you is you can search by barcode to find cover art and movie data. And there are a LOT of databases to search. If you have a hand scanner you can scan the barcode. For the rest of us, you can type the barcode number in to refine the search. Anything that is missing from the data you find can easily be added, including cover art if you have a scanner. If the movie synopsis is missing or less than you'd like you can go to any number of databases like IMDB, copy the synopsis and paste it into your entry for a film.

If you would like to contribute, you can upload your data for a particular film.

Available fields are exhaustive. There are more fields to use than most mortals will ever bother with. You can either use pre-defined reports, modify to suit your needs or create your own. You can include any fields and you can sort on any fields.

If, like me, you would like to have a copy of your database on a Palm, iPod or PC handheld you can do that too. You can either export an HTML version and upload to the portable. Or you can export the fields you select, delimit them (with commas for example) and import into Excel, then sync to your portable. This works very nicely for a handy alphabetized list of films especially if you alternate backround shading in Excel to make you list easier to read on a small screen. Great tool to help avoid duplications when you are shopping for movies.

I always measure a software application by how I would have written it if I had code skills. What would I have done differently or to make it better. I can't fault Movie Collector. It's very good. Highly recommended. A LOT better (and MUCH easier) than doing it myself in Access or Excel and MUCH, MUCH more powerful.

Cons: The user interface takes a little getting used to. It's not glitsy, but it is very functional. I've never had to refer to a help file. OK, this is a good thing in the CONS area. It's all I can think of. It's THAT good.

"Excellent for transferring from Excel to this database."

by HarlanCharleston on April 1, 2007

Pros: Imports from multiple databases, foreign, domestic, and adult.

Cons: I CAN'T BUY IT! I have been trying for days to purchase it and the link gets name and address and goes to blank page before credit card info is requested... Waiting to hear from customer support.
