Version: Collectorz.com Movie Collector 4.10.2
Pros: After a couple of years searching for the perfect VHS/DVD cataloging program, including a couple I wrote in Access, I stumbled across "Movie Collector." "DVD Profiler," with its free basic version, does a very good job but isn't in the same league. The only other program in competition is "Movie Library" from WenSoftware.
So, what's to like? Most programs grab information off the internet, usually from IMDB, a great source. This one uses 13 sources, user's choice as to which ones. But the best feature is batch processing. Instead of adding a title followed by the standard IMDB search, and then adding another, the user can put in as many titles as needed at one time. When "search" is clicked, THEN the internet search begins for all titles at once. Very efficient and very slick. Along with this, a list of possibilities for each title is shown, and we choose the appropriate one. If we're not sure, say if two versions of a story came out in the same or consecutive years, when one of these versions is clicked, a little preview link appears to the right. This downloads basic information, to allow us to determine which version we have in our collection.
"Movie Collector," DVD cataloguers aside, is one of the most well-thought out applications I've ever used. The word "ingenious" came to mind as I cruised through 170 entries in a couple hours. Do yourself a favor, and go for 50 limit trial. You'll be convinced long before that, as I was.
Cons: "Movie Library," the other program I mentioned above, has a nice feature -- it downloads a short critique along with the usual basic statistics. Aside from that, I can think of nothing I would add to this near-perfect cataloguer.
