From Jupiter Multimedia:

In prior Mac OS version you could put a sound in your Startup Items folder and it would play when the Desktop loaded. Mac OS X sounds are aiff sounds and there is no way to have one play at startup. This simple gadget gives you the ability to have a sound play when the desktop loads in X. It has it's own built in sound and 1 extra sound bundled, you can use any custom System 7 sound you like. as usual it's free.
