CNET Editors' review
Facebook's chat feature is a great way to have instant contact with your friends, but it's not always practical to stay logged in to the site all day long (ahem, such as while you're at work). Chit Chat for Facebook acts just like Facebook's own chat feature, but it lets you chat without using your Web browser.
The program's user interface is pretty self-explanatory. Once you sign in using your Facebook username and password, all of your friends who are available to chat appear as "online." Double clicking on a specific person introduces another window with a space at the bottom to type your message. Once you hit Enter, your message appears in the top window for your recipient to see. You can see when he or she is responding to your message, which also appears in the top window. A Save Conversation option also appears in the same window, and it successfully let us save our entire conversation as an HTML file in the location of our choosing. We were able to summon it in our browser without any issues. The program's Preferences menu lets you customize the appearance of your chat messages; turn off any offline notifications, such as when a friend appears online and is available to chat; and even set up a proxy connection. Help is available through a link that takes you to an online FAQ, but we didn't need to use it during our testing. Overall, Chit Chat for Facebook worked as promised and let us stay in touch with our Facebook friends without having to sign into the Web site.

"More then the amelioration of Facebook's chat system"
Version: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.436
Pros
Msn style layout, everybody knows how to use it
Separates offline and online users
Msn style pop-up when a user goes online
The ability to use hotkeys for almost any function together with a bunch of other settings to customize Chit Chat.Cons
Still has some edges to smooth out:
1:The name displayed for each user is not centered vertically, would look better according to me.
2:A option to load user's pictures in higher quality
3:A search bar to find friends in the online sectionSummary
Chit Chat not only fills up that big hole Facebook left when they screwed up their chat system, but also provides a better interface then the former Facebook chat system.
Even though you are using a big screen with lots of workspace it never gets big enough. Limiting the chat of Facebook to a single webpage without the ability to ALT+TAB yourself into a specific chat window you are bound to mouse-click your way to respond to every message while multitasking.
To chat while doing something keyboard intensive, writing a review at Cnet or an essay, having to switch over to the mouse to make two clicks to respond to a message feels counterproductive. At least when you're fast typer on your keyboard. Using Chit Chat you keep all your chat windows together in a stand-alone window, in which you can CTRL+TAB between conversations. It makes chatting while multitasking faster, easier and more accurate.
Also you wont have to see that sad ":P" smiley Facebook has. The whole meaning of the skittish and ironic smiley is perplexed by the Facebook chat's saddened ":P" smiley. Chit Chat has better looking and more emotional/meaning precise smileys that helps both parties in a conversation to understand what they mean using a particular smiley. Not least when having a conversation with someone new that you not yet know in person that good.
Chit Chat gives you the Facebook chat outside the Facebook page, the same contact net at a Msn style base. With the possibility to be like Msn without having to manually add every person it makes chatting with all your friends or 3000 "friends" on Facebook easier, more productive and less of a headadace that Facebook's built-in system is today. -
"Love Chit Chat for Facebook, so simple and customizable"
Version: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.436
Pros
- Simple to install
- Runs on desktop, not in browser
- Clean Graphic
- Awesome Emoticons
- Great customization
- No need to sign up for additional services, like with MeeboCons
- No real cons. Just fill out the survey if you want to as there is no obligation and then install the program.
Summary
It would seem that some users do not quite understand how their anti-virus software works and probably suffer a great deal by not having access to programs like Chit Chat for Facebook. I have Avast myself and Chit Chat installed without any problems then and is still problem free two months later with me using it almost every day.
I find Chit Chat is easy to install, easy to use, and way more fun than the standard Facebook chat. What is really nice is that it runs on the desktop without having to have a browser open. I like the option not to have the browser open as I use Chit Chat to chat with colleagues at times. This way, it is always on my desktop, so if there is a problem, I'll get notified when I am at my computer.
Chit Chat is only for Facebook, which I consider a positive, but some may consider a negative. Since there is no neutral option above, I'll put it here. The animated emoticons are awesome and way better than the static options in Facebook.
They have a BlackBerry version out as well, which I absolutely can't do without.
Oh yeah, there is not need to sign up for anything additional. You can choose to fill out a questionnaire, but you don't have to. Just install the free program and you are good to go. -
"It's super effective"
Version: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.436
Pros
Ease of use, very intuitive compared to other chats, no need to use facebook's poor chat.
Cons
I would love to use the Chit Chat interface as a web chat but it's unfortunately only available as a program.
Summary
Extending it to a web chat will surely bring it to a whole new level and boost the competition with the current top used IMs.

"My new favorite chat app!"
Version: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.436
Pros
I love the chat tabs, makes it easier to chat with my buddies. I used to need a plugin to have that in MSN. It has great functionality like offline messages, wall-writing and sending status updates.
Cons
The music status update can be spammy if enabled for too long. I would love to be able to change the interface of the program, the blue of it didn't match my black Windows skin.
Summary
I was a bit wary to see how this program has gotten such bad reviews, but I figured I'll give it a shot anyhow considering it got a 5/5 CNET review. To my suprise the program was very stable and functional and delivered tons of cool extra features like customizable global hotkeys and much more. I checked some of the other reviews here and then I realized that they hadn't even installed the program. Their antiviruses was warning them about an infected file and didn't let them proceed. My antivirus (NOD32), also warned me, but when I checked it I saw that it was a "potential threat", not a virus or something. This must be from the optional toolbar that is included in the application.

"A good app"
Version: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.436
Pros
Easy setup. No web-browser needed. Better than MSN Messenger.
Cons
Not really a fan of the interface
Summary
All in all, it works as it should. It does it's job better then I thought it would when I downloaded it. It's not a perfect product, but it certainly not worth only 1 star.
