CNET Editors' review
When it comes to producing professional-looking movies and demos from your computer screen, TechSmith's Camtasia Studio continues to strike the right balance between a powerful toolset and ease of use. Version 7.1 adds even more features without making the app any more complex to use.
The feature-packed screencast app--which includes HD production settings--does have a learning curve, but the user-friendly interface and front-and-center icons for most-used tools go a long way toward lowering the intimidation factor a notch. Plus, TechSmith povides a useful online help center that includes several video tutorials that do a nice job walking users through the main functionality of the software.
Even better, when you first launch Camtasia Studio 7.1, you're greeted with an integrated tutorial video that helps get you acquainted with the software. The main window features a content area in the upper right that showcases a variety of options. Here, you can view the clip bin, access your content library, and tweak features such as callouts, zoom-n-pan, audio, and transitions. TechSmith populates a variety templates, music, and outros supplied from a third-party vendor known as Digital Juice, with additional content available for purchase.
As for feature updates, there are quite a few for such a relatively minor boost in version number. Camtasia now includes the ability to record system audio, as well as automatically resize windows during recording. Plus, you get the option to "smartfocus" on key frames and add close captions to your presentation. Additonally, the app offers speech-to-text with a voice training feature; auto output to more formats, such as the iPad; and the ability to overlay text and search within Flash video.
Beyond these additions, Camtasia Studio remains largely the same powerhouse for creating and producing screencasts for the Web, mobile phones, and DVDs. Well-rounded production settings continue to present presets for novices; additional applications, like an audio editor and the CD MenuMaker, round out the features.
At $300, the price of a creative screencasting license is steep, but if the 30-day trial leaves you wanting more, Camtasia Studio is a worthwhile investment for frequent screencast producers requiring a lush feature set. Users looking to develop skills with prolonged use should start here, too.

"Good Video Editing Software; Best Screen Capture"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
+HD Screen Capture
+Zoom and Pan was Great!
+You can adjust video quality! (With Fast Rendering!)Cons
-No Effects :(
-Adding something in timeline can split the track
-You can't make it fade while adding the transitions (Not like Windows Movie Maker)Summary
FIRST OF ALL! I am pretty pissed at some reviewers who keeps on saying the following:
"It keeps on crashing!"
"So many bugs..."
"Laggy Screen Recorder"
I am going to be honest with you. Mine is also lagging (the screen recorder) but, why did I say best?
Because I am doing this review not just for myself but for others to get interested on this product too. I have a reason why it lagged. It is because I have a bad computer. Look at others in YouTube, theirs did not lag. So, do you have a good computer? NO! So stop posting bad stuff about this product because it is your PC's fault not the product because this product is great.
Now onto the review. First up the screen capture. The screen capture is great! You can capture it HD! If it lags for you, go get another screen recorder and edit it with Camtasia. You can adjust the quality on this product. The video size is smaller? USE THE ZOOM AND PAN! God, this video editing software is great. And what is better is that the rendering is faster than Windows Movie Maker!
My concerns about this product is that there is no effects. This is my biggest concerns so far on why there is no effects... Not like Windows Movie Maker. Adding something on the timeline splits the track which makes the editing ruined. Why can't it just stay? And adding transitions can't fade the video. If you don't know what I mean, It is like the sound and will fade when you add the transitions. If you still don't get it, try adding transitions on Windows Movie Maker, it fades the sounds.
Overall, this product is great. Although, the price is a ripoff. They should lower the price. Like $230. But I did not add them in my concerns because it is not much of a big deal. Although I mentioned Windows Movie Maker to this review, it is still better than Windows Movie Maker. BUT they just have things that Camtasia Studio doesn't have.
If Camtasia Studio and Windows Movie Maker were to be combined, I could have gave this product a perfect score! Thanks for reading my review and hope you get my point!

"Fast Screen Capture"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
This is the best screen capture software out there. I'm interning at a large computer company and we needed to record powerpoints. I found this software and it works great.
Cons
It's expensive. But I didn't have to pay for it.
Summary
All in all, it is extremely good screen capture.

"Easy to use and very powerful software...love it"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Creates beautiful HD movies
Tutorials are easy to follow
Great transitions and effects
Has useful presets
Pretty intuitive design
Good Support staffCons
A bit of a steep learning curve at first
Summary
I didn't know the first thing about making videos when I got the program. I found the first few tries a bit confusing but later found that it was because I really wasn't paying attention as well as I should to the tutorials.
Since doing what I'm supposed to the process has been so much easier. The end product is quality stuff.
I still have much to learn but I'm having fun with it now. Just started using it to edit and upload iPhone movies for work purposes and instructional vids.......awesome!!!!
If you're not sure try out the trial version for 30 DAYS. You have nothing to lose and you won't be dissapointed.
All the best,

"Very robust and easy to use"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Fast ramp up from install to being creative and feature selection is intuitive. Introduction video is a plus.
Cons
Some features such as changing from video edit to sound track edit could be easier but overall this was very minor as it took a couple of 'guess clicks' in the interface to achieve the change.

"very nice !"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
It works !!
Cons
I am just getting started.
-
"Great in all way"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Records from webcam, easy editing, nice special effects, great for recording computer screen for tutorials, beats Windows Movie Maker in the long run, and is just great in the end.
Cons
The only con I can think of is that it records terrible low quality footage from a webcam, but that can be changed by using alternative programs such as windows live movie maker or AMcap
Summary
This program is really great. If you hate windows movie maker like I did, then you will love this program. Also, I was able to get this program absolutely free! I can't type the serial here, so I typed it onto a text document and uploaded it to mediafire. Here is the link:

"Frustrating, corrupted waste of time."
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Online tutorials are easy to follow (and necessary).
Zoom and pan look nice.Cons
Just 5 days in to the 30-day, free trial, I have had to un-install and re-install Camtasia twice now.
The first time I installed, I was not able to use the transition feature and a couple of the others did not function like the tutorial videos showed they should.
Today, am having to re-install AGAIN because over 2 days worth of recording and editing have been invested and now when I "play" the video (not "produced" yet), it runs for between 5 and 15 seconds before crashing. I have "sent" 7+ "error reports". I've restarted my computer, played other videos trying to troubleshoot, etc. The other videos that were produced by other people also cause Camtasia to crash. The videos don't even have audio. Just basic videos with basic editing, nothing fancy.Summary
I'll be looking for an alternative program. Especially since I see that this fragile, finicky piece of software is priced at $299!?
I don't see that kind of value in it.
My time is worth something. -
"Great Product!"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Used for recording videos
Cons
Cons? What Cons? None.
-
"This Program Is Terrible"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
Pretty graphics on the recording screen
Cons
Not Stable - very easy to crash and force a reboot
Features you would want are not available and the ones that are there are awkward and not intuitive.
The on-line help/manual is terrible.Summary
This software is a piece of junk and not worth the bits it takes to download. The final straw with my working with this software is when it repeatedly crashed and forced me to reboot my computer when I clicked on the "Recorded Audio" button to change the audio source. Don't waste your time with this one.

"Sucks, Expensive, Snooty designers, Awkward"
Version: Camtasia Studio 7.1
Pros
I really can't think of any. I dread having to open it up.
Cons
Freezes & loses files
Awkward file structures & naming conventions
Doesn't support common audio devices, though they acknowledge problem, they won't fix.
Won't add simple features repeatedly requested by users
Awkward editing processes
Sucks up HUGE amounts of system resources
The longer the video and the more edits, the greater the risk of losing the file. Their solution? Do less edits and break into segments.Summary
Camtasia has been a horror. It takes several tries to record & edit simple PPT presentations.
Parent company Techsmith has general attitude of "we'll tell you what you need, don't bother us". They fix and enhance what THEY think is important, not what customers want. Same issues with other product Screencast.
AVI does 99% of the same things for $59 a year. I'd never do business with these people again.
