CLIX for Mac

Publisher's Description

From Rixstep:

CLIX is a Mac OS X command line interface in a Cocoa app. Do all those things your system maintenance utilities try to do - but do them better and do them your own way. You have to perform maintenance routines. You know that. But make a mistake - especially in one of those glittery AppleScript apps - and what happens? You'll have no such fear with CLIX. CLIX is safer - and for the skilled professional safer than even Terminal. From almost every security standpoint.

Access to the full power of your operating system. Your computer runs smoother. You learn more, become better and more skilled at running it. CLIX makes it easier for beginners to get up to speed with their new system. For the professional developer or system administrator it's an indispensable tool - a work of reference used by universities around the globe, NASA, the US military, and scientific institutions everywhere.

"Good introduction to the UNIX command line."

    May 16, 2010  |   By ScottieBeach

    Version: CLIX 2.0.0.9

    Pros

Let's you see, save, edit UNIX commands.

    Cons

Really hard to find what you're looking for in it. Download this and you get version 2.0.0.7, not 2.0.0.9 which is fine asit's still a great tool but don't bother downloading it if you already have 2.0.0.7.

    Summary

Good to have just to scroll through to help see what's possible under the hood of your Mac.

I can't vouch for the developer's social skills or ethics, but CLIX is one of the most useful apps I know. By combining it with AquaLess (for output) and CocoaDialog (for input), I can pretty much create my own GUI application out of shell scripts.

    "A must-have utility..."

    Version: CLIX 1.8a

For those who have no desire to understand the workings of their computer, then maybe Clix looks a little less user-friendly than might be desired. Spend 30 minutes of your time with it, however, and you'll not only be able to take control of your computer, but will likely save yourself some money on some of the bloated 'system utilities' of dubious quality that are out there (no names, no pack drill)...

For the rest of us, this is a power users tool par excellence, and should be in everyone's utilities folder. Even for those of us who are comfortable working at the command line, Clix is an aide memoir like no other. No wonder Apple themselves use it!

I am running 1.8.0 (last update of ACP). I am understanding that the Unix is the "power" (please, refer to the message that appeares the first time you open Terminal).
CLIX is the "beginning of the end", for whom has some curiosity about mac ("common" people as me, I do not think to developers and/or programmers or Apple's engeneers).

    Summary

No way. Little documentation. Has commands that should not be accessible by us regular folk without a clear user friendly interface with adequate explanation.

I'd love to give this a mixed review.... 4 stars for expert computer users and professionals. 2 stars or less for the rest of us.

    Version: CLIX 1.7.2d

    Summary

This is what I'd been looking for for a long while -- a way to make sense of the Mac using the command line.

It's not for point-and-grunt --- you have to know "how to ask questions the smart way" (hint -- paste the quoted string into Google and read and understand).

The support is at www.dotatdot.co.uk/clix/ (the pointer to that is at the site where Clix comes from, rixstep.com)

"Give the Developer his Due!!! 5STARS!!!!"

    Version: CLIX 1.7.2d

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I must admit that with this version and the developer's explanation to option double click the command line the man pages open up beautifully. In addition clicking on the open space next to the command line and typing in your inquiry also opens up the proper man page. I think that this is an excellent way to learn a little unix by constantly repeating various commands from the windows. However caution is in order here as not all of the stuff is terribly necessary and may even be deleterios to your computer's operation. (Just like some of the stuff in Tinkertool System and Cocktail andMacPilot. Taken in small doses this can be helpful. Mucho thanks to Mr. Clix. Can we PULEEZE have a more detailed and more up to date set of instructions as we are not all computer geeks. I personally don't have the slightest idea of what "Apropos" is unless it is the name of a restaurant in Philadelphia,
