Organize your mondo video library with this handy software tool. CATVids helps you create a database of DVDs, VHS tapes, and those great family-vacation films so you can keep track of what you have on hand and what you have on loan. At launch the program starts immediately with the main window and a detailed help file. CATVids is organized into five views: Explorer, Video, Contents, Loan, and Lookup. Each section can handle a ton of information about a film, such as movie title, cast, and rating, as well as what format the film is in and where you got it. Search options include actor or genre (whether it's a TV movie, animation, or drama). You can pull information from the Web and download it directly into the CATVids database. With DVDs, this operation is no harder than inserting a disc and pressing the Scan DVD button. If you want to take your catalog out of the house, you can upload it to the Notes section of your iPod (though we didn't test this feature). CATVids is a fine choice for movie fans who spend more time looking for DVDs than watching them.Publisher's description

Version: CATVids 7.1.4
Pros: Does what it says
Cons: Trial. You can do exactly the same and better in Filemaker.

"Program is nice, but not worth the money"
Pros: Ease of use, nice way to catalogue, will keep track of your DVD's, home videos, etc
Cons: Why would you pay almost $40.00 for this? The same effect can be acheived by opening up Microsoft Excel. I just don't understand the reason for this program if it isn't free. And the trial is very limited - FYI.

"Genres are available, many other positives"
Pros: Responding to the analysis by sbsca1995 -- GENRE fields DO exist - they are called Categories, reside in Lookup Tables and take a little digging to find.
..........
Ultimately, one can change the Content View to include a sort by Categories with a column view including this info, but this takes a little experimentation.
..........
The canned reports are more than adequate, but to enhance or modify them the user must engage in actual page layout in Access format - a process that could be made easier and more transparent to the user in future versions.
..........
One nice thing about this program is the ability to toggle the DVD cover images on and off -- in other programs these graphics chew up a lot of screen real estate and are not really necessary. Another nice thing is that a simple Contents View screen will suffice for most users, but other views and extensive reports are available for those who want them.
..........
Reviews of this and other similar programs available on C|NET point out that a serious person can create something comparable in Excel or Access or Filemaker. While this is true, not everyone has that level of proficiency, or if they do, not everyone has the time and the desire to recreate the wheel. If off-the-shelf software can meet 80% of a user's needs, then it deserves serious purchase consideration.
..........
CATVids goes beyond this threshhold, offering considerable power (and resultant complexity). As an experienced user, I would prefer to have a high level of capability and use only the portion I need, rather than have a lesser program that falls short of my requirements.
