This diagnostic tool gives your computer a proper tune-up by testing your hard drive's subsystems. We appreciate its thoroughness and its fully functional trial, but wished for a working Help file.

BurnInTest Standard's easy-to-read user interface will appeal to even the most novice users. You'll find intuitive command buttons, and a list of all of the subsystems to be scanned. A small screen pops up for each system and you can watch the detailed scan in progress. The whole scan process took about 15 minutes on average for our testers, but considering its thoroughness, that isn't overly long. We were able to save a log of the results to our location of choice, and print them. The extensive Preferences menu allows you to go into each subsystem and run individual tests, and even set test cycle times.

The only problem we encountered with the program was a faulty Help option, which might scare away novice users. Still, even users with some experience should be able to pick up this app. And not only do you get an ample, 30-day trial period with BurnInTest Standard, it also allows you to try all of its features without restriction, which is a definite plus in our book.

Society's reliance on computers means that the cost of hardware failure can be enormous. BurnInTest can thoroughly exercises PC hardware in the shortest period of time so intermittent or hidden problems are found before they turn into a disaster. BurnInTest is an easy-to-use software tool that simultaneously exercises all of the major components of a computer to test for endurance and reliability. The user can select hardware components to test and individually adjust the load placed on each one via slide bars. Each test reports results to its own window and results are summarised along with any errors detected in the main program window.

A computer's major components (including CPUs, raw and formatted hard drives, tape/CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives, sound and graphics cards, RAM, network connections and ports) can be tested at the same time. Results can be saved to disk, printed or exported as a graphical image. Other features include periodic logging, a temperature monitoring interface and max CPU temperature test, and timed test runs. BurnInTest also gives users access to detailed system information including as the CPU data (such as amount of CPU cores and physical CPUs, CPU features, clock speed and L2 cache size); Physical and Virtual Memory read outs and advanced Graphics Card information. Pre-defined quick tests, context sensitive right-click menus and hotkeys for common tasks means that stress-testing your machine has never been easier. BurnInTest is also available with serial, parallel and USB loopback plugs to facilitate port testing and features comprehensive online help and in-built help files. All purchases of BurnInTest 6 include 12 months of free technical support and major/minor software upgrades. BurnInTest is suited to computer enthusiasts, systems integrators and manufacturers or anyone who wants to cost effectively evaluate their system. BurnInTest 6 features a more comprehensive CPU test, including new prime number and max heat test; a new Unformatted Disk test and Blu-Ray read test; support for Windows Server 2008; more detailed system information accessible to users; a new set of 'Quick Tests'; new Hotkeys and right-click menus. Build 1007 introduces fixes and features which include: 2D Video Memory Test improvements; minor tuning to the management of RAM for the memory test; improvements to the Raw disk test and corrections for physical disk numbered ten and above; and a correction to the logging script and the 'Notes' field.
