Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.3
Pros: I looked at a lot of freeware batch file renamers, and they all were either incomprehensible, dangerously unreliable, or both, and then I tried Bulk Rename Utility. It is everything I wanted -- powerful and incredibly easy to use.
If you often do a particular type of renaming, create a folder for the files you want to rename, choose your BRU renaming options (falling-off-a-log easy), save this configuration as a "favourite" (BRU is from Britain) -- then just click that favourite desktop icon when you have files to rename, click the "rename" button in the lower right hand corner of the interface that opens up, and your files will be renamed; that's about as easy as it gets.
This mature product has been ported to all Windows versions from 98SE to Vista, and is also available in a "no-installer" version said to run on all platforms.
There is a well-designed, full-featured website with user forums, support, etc.
As is always true for freeware, donations are accepted but there's no nag screen and BRU is not crippleware; there is no paid version.
If you're like me and have been looking for a good freeware batch file renamer, try this one, and you'll stop looking!
Cons: I haven't found anything about BRU that I don't like!
