Another variation on the classic Breakout game, Brixout XP makes strides in terms of design, although its feature set is largely the same as those of its competitors. The game's interface is great, and we particularly enjoyed the pleasing graphics and effects, though some other breakout titles look better. In terms of play, Brixout XP is almost identical to many similar games. The object is to break bricks that float above you, with the opportunity to earn special bonuses such as extra points and fire balls. At the end of the day, we think this game will appeal to die-hard fans of breakout titles, although people seeking more variety may enjoy something else more.

Brixout XP is a fast-action, block-smashing 3D game of the Arkanoid and Breakout family. The game features gorgeous 3D graphics, crystal-clear sound, an original soundtrack, and perfectly tuned gameplay. The advanced 3D engine sports 32-bit color in resolutions from 640-by-480 to 2,048-by-1,536, real-time lighting, and particle effects such as colored smoke, sparks, bubbles, and explosions. You work your way through more than 120 unique levels in five distinctive worlds (Dragon Fortress, Orbital Station, Temple of Lava, Flying Castle, and Elvish Hills), encountering more than 20 kinds of power-ups and more than 30 types of bricks as you go. There's joystick and gamepad support, multiplayer competition among up to four players in Hot Seat mode, and free add-on packs. To accommodate differences in skill, four levels of difficulty are available. Version 2.5 adds a load/save feature.

Ball physics are okay. There's a reasonable selection of power ups and the game back drops add to the overall look of the game.

It's a little dated now, and also the price tag. You can get it totally free from the following address:

Summary
I found the paddle hard to control using the mouse because it seemed too jerky in its movements, not smooth like most arkanoid clones. The paddle also seemed too small compared to the size of the ball. The game does NOT alt-tab out well, and ended up crashing my system a couple of times after attempting to alt-tab. However, the graphics are superb and the background is very pleasing to the eyes. In fact, watching it often caused me to lose the ball. :P Some of the powerups were interesting. You can have an alien ship zap your bricks, for example. If some minor things were improved, it would be a great game.
