There are a lot of widgets out there demanding your attention and screen space. This batch, from the BBC, is nicely designed, but slow to respond.
BBC News Feeder offers a bunch of obvious utilities--clock, calendar, weather, news headline feed--but they have an appealing look and are easy to configure. Some testers using Vista got a warning message that the gadget wasn't valid, but the files still installed and operated as a vertical sidebar on the right side of the screen. Our main complaint is that these widgets responded so slowly to our demands. Clicking a headline in the vertically scrolling feed opened a fresh browser window--after a short delay. At first it seemed like the utility was hung up and needed to restart, but eventually it would respond.
This free collection of gadgets looks nice, but the response time isn't acceptable in a faster-is-better working environment.
