CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

Making simple crop edits to videos of all formats shouldn't be tricky business, but most tools out there either do way too much or are so belabored with ads that who knows what evil lurks within their code.

Open-source on the GNU license, Avidemux is a breath of fresh air. Cropping a video is as simple as selecting the section you want to remove and then hitting the Delete key. Re-encoding a video is equally painless: select the output format from the drop-down list, save the file, and you're good to go. When choosing where to start and stop a crop, there's both incremental and multisecond advance and rewind tools, There's also a not insubstantial list of video and audio codecs that files can be converted to. Video formats include multiple codecs for FLV, MPEG, AVI, VCD, H.263/4, and others, while audio formats include MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, and one or two more.

The program also includes advanced options, including generic decoder and post-processing tools, user-defined filters, GlyphSet adjustments, and more features. Avidemux should appeal to users of all abilities who are looking for a quick way to edit down video files.

    "Brilliant! Goodbye MovieMaker."

by pmounsey on June 19, 2009

Pros: Makes simple movie editing a breeze. Quick to save the finished edit. Simple interface, not very intuitive but quick to use.

Cons: I would prefer that more of the options defaulted to the last used choices to save selecting them each time.

Summary: This is a really good application. I have tried many paid for packages but this is the best for my simple needs. The relief of never having to use Movie Maker ever again is enormous. I recommend spending half an hour getting used to the way it works... read more >>

    "easy to use, but imprecise"

by dubhippy on June 9, 2009

Pros: it's one of the few free programs that actually WORKS & it works with w98 which NOTHING i tried before did

Cons: hard to get precise, frame accurate edits out of it. i just tried to use it again after being horrified by what win's editor did to 12 hours worth of editing & found that it was distorting my AVI raw footage sound too right out of the box.

Summary: it's an OK editor that will work where others refuse to or are payware bait & switch scams, but the editor in DVD shrink is more accurate, if a little clunkier to use, AND DVD shrink doesn't require you to first convert DVD files to AVI or MPEG ... read more >>

"Very easy, even for this novice...."

by NoeticOne on June 7, 2009

Pros: I am not experienced at all with video editing, but this program has, so far, been the easiest thing to use that I have come across.

Cons: When one DOES find something not intuitively obvious, it does take a little playing about with to figure it out. Documentation should be present, even if it were a bit skimpy; but alas is no where to be found.

Summary: I downloaded it because I had a short video to edit; installed it, and used it to edit in much less time then it took to install (and that didn't take long at all). I give this a two thumbs up :-)

"Super - easy to use - great result - quick & slick"

by livingfossil on June 4, 2009

Pros: I use many different video editors but this one is a beauty ? not because it does everything but because it is simple and quick to edit a video even for the newbies and with very little effort you can add your own sound track.

Cons: Not many and once you know them its not a problem See my full comments - black mark #1 is no in built help (oops !) so the user has to guess what the buttons do #2 when you save the file you have to add the ending

Summary: I don?t usually add comments but I think this app is really special ? it delivers a really excellent result for even the most inexperienced user with plenty of capability ie options under the hood for the expert ? OK there are better editors around ... read more >>

"Too complex for the scant documentation"

by shannondkeith on June 3, 2009

Pros: It easily allows you to set crop markers and has a great frame-by-frame tool.

Cons: Steep learning curve if you don't know much about video encoding.

Summary: I'm sure it's a great tool for people with professional video training, but it's a bit too complex if all you want to do is edit out the scene where the clown falls into little Suzy's birthday cake at her 5th birthday party. You have to know which a... read more >>
