Making simple crop edits to videos of all formats shouldn't be tricky business, but most tools out there either do way too much or are so belabored with ads that who knows what evil lurks within their code.

Open-source on the GNU license, Avidemux is a breath of fresh air. Cropping a video is as simple as selecting the section you want to remove and then hitting the Delete key. Re-encoding a video is equally painless: select the output format from the drop-down list, save the file, and you're good to go. When choosing where to start and stop a crop, there's both incremental and multisecond advance and rewind tools, There's also a not insubstantial list of video and audio codecs that files can be converted to. Video formats include multiple codecs for FLV, MPEG, AVI, VCD, H.263/4, and others, while audio formats include MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, and one or two more.

The program also includes advanced options, including generic decoder and post-processing tools, user-defined filters, GlyphSet adjustments, and more features. Avidemux should appeal to users of all abilities who are looking for a quick way to edit down video files.

"Brilliant! Goodbye MovieMaker."

June 19, 2009  |  By pmounsey

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

Makes simple movie editing a breeze. Quick to save the finished edit. Simple interface, not very intuitive but quick to use.

Cons

I would prefer that more of the options defaulted to the last used choices to save selecting them each time.

Summary

This is a really good application. I have tried many paid for packages but this is the best for my simple needs. The relief of never having to use Movie Maker ever again is enormous. I recommend spending half an hour getting used to the way it works. If you want fancy storyboarding and transitions then this won't do. If you want to quickly take a lot of footage and crop and arrange it then this is superb. It is quicker for first cut editing for later processing by a more complex pacakage.

"easy to use, but imprecise"

June 09, 2009  |  By dubhippy

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

it's one of the few free programs that actually WORKS & it works with w98 which NOTHING i tried before did

Cons

hard to get precise, frame accurate edits out of it. i just tried to use it again after being horrified by what win's editor did to 12 hours worth of editing & found that it was distorting my AVI raw footage sound too right out of the box.

Summary

it's an OK editor that will work where others refuse to or are payware bait & switch scams, but the editor in DVD shrink is more accurate, if a little clunkier to use, AND DVD shrink doesn't require you to first convert DVD files to AVI or MPEG as it's a standalone DVD ripper.

you'll still need an external editor or file joiner with DVD shrink, but you'll be starting out with finer edits and less glitching.

"Very easy, even for this novice...."

June 07, 2009  |  By NoeticOne

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

I am not experienced at all with video editing, but this program has, so far, been the easiest thing to use that I have come across.

Cons

When one DOES find something not intuitively obvious, it does take a little playing about with to figure it out. Documentation should be present, even if it were a bit skimpy; but alas is no where to be found.

Summary

I downloaded it because I had a short video to edit; installed it, and used it to edit in much less time then it took to install (and that didn't take long at all). I give this a two thumbs up :-)

"Super - easy to use - great result - quick & slick"

June 04, 2009  |  By livingfossil

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

I use many different video editors but this one is a beauty ? not because it does everything but because it is simple and quick to edit a video even for the newbies and with very little effort you can add your own sound track.

Cons

Not many and once you know them its not a problem See my full comments - black mark #1 is no in built help (oops !) so the user has to guess what the buttons do #2 when you save the file you have to add the ending

Summary

I don?t usually add comments but I think this app is really special ? it delivers a really excellent result for even the most inexperienced user with plenty of capability ie options under the hood for the expert ? OK there are better editors around for professional use but this is one I will be recommending to my friends (those who only get to fiddle with videos occasionally) as really outstanding and congratulations to the developer.

Now to be fair there are a couple of pains - the lack of inbuilt help is a pain as other reviewers have noted and could drive you nuts - However the webwiki at www.avidemux.org/admWiki/index.php?title=Main_Page is pretty good and pressing the right buttons soon is automatic ? it really is a very good interface to use
I would like to see an edit menu button or a cut/delete option down with the bottom toolbar as when you are working with mouse in that spot it is a drag to have to go up to the main menu and find a drop there

The other pain again I agree with other reviewers is that saving a file in Windows means it gets saved with no extension so Windows then doesn?t know what to do with it. Although the file is correctly coded as an MP4 or AVI or WMV or whatever you have selected it is just saved as a file eg ?Myvideo? so in the save window you have to add to the name the extension that will tell Windows what kind of file this is eg ?Myvideo.mp4? Not difficult but a pain (a) if you forget when editing and (b) you are a first time user and then cannot figure out what went wrong

OK there are extras you might like eg add your own audio comments over the existing soundtrack ? you can do this ? it is a bit fiddly at the moment and the developer provides for you to add a extra track but only in mp3 or AC3 and you cannot adjust this second track in the editor ? You first have to record your comments in a separate application (I like Audacity freeware for a simple one) then add it to the track. Watch the video and record your commentary at the same time if you computer is quick enough or record it on another gadget (phone, mp3 player or audio recorder) and then record an MP3 file from that.
Then add the track ? if it is too loud or too soft you can fix it in Audacity

I rarely provide comments but this developer deserves it. Overall a great job and what a bargain as a free app. If you are a non professional looking for a quick easy to use video editor giving great results I say try this one first

"Too complex for the scant documentation"

June 03, 2009  |  By shannondkeith

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

It easily allows you to set crop markers and has a great frame-by-frame tool.

Cons

Steep learning curve if you don't know much about video encoding.

Summary

I'm sure it's a great tool for people with professional video training, but it's a bit too complex if all you want to do is edit out the scene where the clown falls into little Suzy's birthday cake at her 5th birthday party. You have to know which audio, video, and output formats go together and I've yet to get a playable file after about 4 hours of trying. The documentation is pretty much useless to lay people.

Pros

Works OK on some things but is not what I am looking for.

Cons

Just not what I was looking for.

"You have to add file extensions manually(.avi, .flv...)"

April 27, 2009  |  By Pzeise

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

Worked very easily, once I figured it out
Came out looking nice
fast, and simple

Cons

Hard to figure out

Summary

Worked fine for me just hard to figure out.
All you do is edit, then save it.
Problem is output file does not incluede extensions such as .avi or .flv so if you name it "Video-1" that is what it's saved as, so if you want it to be .avi you select avi from the drop down and then have the name as "Video-1.avi"

"Useless Without Documentation"

April 25, 2009  |  By ecosman

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

APPEARS to be well thought out and very functional. Nice to see FLV output supported.

Cons

There is no help file, no on-line instruction/tutorial, no read me file in download. In short, good luck figuring out how to use it. I played around with it for an hour and I could not create an output (I am an experienced user though not a geek.)

Summary

Unless you are a programmer or want to spend hours of trial and error trying to figure out how to use it, wait until they include some how-to-use-it files in the program or at least provide a tutorial on the website. Five star fanboy below must be part of the development team....

"To get something like this for free is unbelievable."

April 20, 2009  |  By naaabi

 |  Version: Avidemux 2.4.4

Pros

That cnet download I wanted to keep a secret and only gave you a clue, it's avidemux. I use it all the time. For the basic task of adding a different soundtrack and pasting video together alone it's worth it.

Cons

So much more I could do with this if I was a developer and understood all the complexities of video and scripts.

Summary

This cnet download I wanted to keep a secret and only gave you a clue, it's avidemux. Don't take any notice of some of the stupid comments here. To get something like this for free is unbelievable. I use it all the time. For the basic task of adding a different soundtrack and pasting video together it's worth it alone. If you stick to the same codec it's so fast but it can do much more complex stuff if you want to mix codecs and add filters .
Fantastic. Superlatives aren't good enough. Not since I bought a second hand video camera for peanuts from the market and then managed to get it working have I had such a thrill. (long time ago when video cameras were expensive and not many people could afford them).

Updated on Apr 20, 2009

I forgot to mention you can edit and render hd video as well. Here is one I made and put on facebook using only the basic tools so it didn't take more than about a minute to produce. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1014730023625

Yess. Someone else that has seen the light.
You can add .wavs too. Being greedy I wanted more filter options and was hoping I could find some of these at one of the avidemux sites but the programming language was too much for me. I tried the eraser filter but it would not work. I kept getting fatal errors. Eventually I opted for the add logo filter. What a great filter it turned out to be. When you consider you can use it several times in the same project and then I discovered the partial tool for filters it's like a colour filter, a caption tool and could be a subtitler all rolled in to one. The partial tool lets you choose which frames to apply the "logo " to. The jpg can be whatever size you make it and can be moved where you want. The luma means you can adjust the opacity so the picture can act like a colour filter.
Today was really fun. See what I was able to do with avidemux.
