There's more than one way to record desktop video, but most of them have the common problem of taking too long to open and use. Wisdom Software's AutoScreenRecorder is an easy-to-use, free tool for quickly recording video of your desktop, including mouse gestures. Once you've set it up to suit your needs, all you need to do is press a hot key to start recording video with AutoScreenRecorder.

AutoScreenRecorder's user interface features large, clearly marked buttons for all the functions you'll use most often. Record Now/Stop and Stand By buttons handle recording duties, while From, To, and Advanced buttons access properties pages with simple but useful options. For example, under From we could configure the hot-key combos. Pressing F9 starts recording instantly, letting us quickly capture desktop images. We could also select which part of the screen to capture. The rectangular selection tool is the program's default, but after we'd used AutoScreenRecorder for a while, we realized the best choice is the full-screen capture: you won't miss anything important, and you can always edit later.

The rectangular selection tool has various advantages, too, such as magnification, but it's too fiddly and takes too long for quick jobs. Under To, we could choose a recording codec (Microsoft Video 1 is the default selection) and AVI file options as well as setting file-naming options and choosing a destination folder. The Advanced settings are actually quite basic, just check boxes for showing Screentips Help and using bold text for selected items. We could also add AutoScreenRecorder to our Startup menu. Clicking Help on the interface opened an indexed, searchable Help file that explained the program's features and functions.

As we noted, using a single function key to start recording desktop video instantly is the best way to use AutoScreenRecorder, and the program's best advantage over similar tools. We pressed F9, and then pressed it again moments later. AutoScreenRecorder opened the AVI recording inside our default media player and simultaneously opened a small pop-up that let us choose to save the video within 30 seconds, at which time it would be saved automatically in our destination folder. The video played cleanly in our player.

Pros

The free version doesn't cost anything and so the price is unbeatable. The software is effective and works well also on Windows 8.1

Cons

configuration options are the field of the paid version

Summary

It's a great software to record the screen on windows, it is easy to use and works well with the latest versions of Windows.

"Didn't work on first try"

 |  Version: AutoScreenRecorder 3.1.125

Pros

It was during school year when I didn't have time to thoroughly debug it. I think the problem had to do with recorded videos not playing properly on secondary machines.

Cons

Didn't work.

"One of the Best Screen Recorder I have ever used."

 |  Version: AutoScreenRecorder 3.1.125

Pros

Very Easy to use. Basically, you just choose a way to record (a rectangular area, window, etc.), and then, hit your hotkey on the keyboard to record.

The default quality is already pretty good. I use the videos for my work directly.

I used it on XP and Windows 7. Also checked with my latest Windows 8, and it works!

Cons

Only the Pro version comes with Sound recordig. On one PC, I can record both my mic and the youtube video sound. But on another old PC, I can only record from my mic. I guess it's my old sound card issue, though.

Summary

This is an amazingly well designed recording piece. It's by far the most user friendly amongst the recorder's I've used. I've used about 2 years now, and I'm very happy with the program!

"Does not permit F9 key use in other software"

 |  Version: AutoScreenRecorder 3.1.125

Pros

Installed easily, seems to work okay.

Cons

Installed and ran program, seems to function as reviewed. I did not add it to autostart and exited program. Later, I tried to use F9 key to insert a breakpoint in an Excel macro, but it started recording and flashing the screen, I pressed ALT F10 to cancel. Rebooted and same result. Uninstalled program, REBOOTED AGAIN, problem solved.

Summary

If you have any other software that uses the F9 key, do not install this program.

"Does not record games"

September 11, 2012  |  By Gigglebunny

 |  Version: AutoScreenRecorder 3.1.125

Pros

It records the desktop itself. It records audio through a mic.

Cons

It minimizes any program you are using and even if you re-open it, it still records the desktop BEHIND the program.

Summary

Disappointing.

"Simplest Screen Recorder I've ever used"

July 06, 2012  |  By brainout

 |  Version: AutoScreenRecorder 3.1.125

Pros

EASY TO USE. Simple interface in either Free or Pro version allows you to record by means of a hot-key, if you configure your options in advance. So you are never stuck with the recording program, interfering with what you capture in your video.

Handles sounds recording too, whether (and both) you use your webcam microphone or 'What you hear' -- so you can record from both channels at once.

Cons

1. No option to compress audio, even when you select Xvid codec with options TO compress the Audio (i.e., to 192 kpbs). So you always have to convert the file.
2. Keyboard conflicts with some software make ASR crash unexpectedly. Beware of the Mousehooks. ASR doesn't tell you what mousehooks it uses.
3. Unfortunately, the ASR people don't respond to emails reporting these problems.
4. Product hasn't been updated.
5. If you choose to pick a certain area (other than full screen) for your recording, you get this very annoying GRID in red as soon as you hit your hotkey to record.
6. Their video editor is useless.
7. Their audio converter can only work with WAV files, due to #4.
8. No useful help, but what software actually provides competent help, these days?

Summary

Since 2008, I've made over 300 (500?) Youtube HD instructional videos using this software. Am still using it.

The Pro version allows you to record sound, and to record a specific area of the screen. The latter is buggy, so I never use it. Generally, operation is swift, easy. You just click on the icon, click on Stand By button, and it minimizes to the system tray. That's why it's important to set your recording options (i.e., what codec to use) -- in advance. You don't have many options.

When you hit the hotkey to record, a little blue ball appears on the icon in the system tray, so you can see as you record, that it's on. Which matters, because certain programs use mousehooks which conflict with ASR, so the latter suddenly crashes without notice; you can't fix the video, because the leftover temp file of the video, never includes sound. But it will play.

It's due to this unknown mousehook problem that I regretfully seek a replacement. I've emailed ASR in the past about problems and no one ever answered, so will not email them again, now.

UPDATE/CORRECTIONS, now that I can see my first review:
1. Only with Pro can you record sound.
2. And yes you CAN set audio compression if you select Xvid-MPEG-4. If you want to see the quality of the recording and sound using that same Xvid setting -- which uses my webcam recorder -- see 'brainouty' on Youtube, non-face videos during first week July 2012, when I started using the Sound function with Xvid.
