Publisher's description of AutoHotkey 1.0.47.02

This open-source utility can automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write macros by hand or use the macro recorder. You can also create hotkeys for keyboard, mouse, joystick, and handheld remote controls. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey. Similarly, you can define abbreviations that expand as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way". Finally, you can create custom data entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars. Other features: remap keys; change soundcard settings (like volume or mute); use a joystick or keyboard as a mouse; make any window transparent, always-on-top, or alter its shape; manipulate the clipboard; customize the tray menu's icon and menu items; run existing AutoIt v2 scripts; and convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on any PC.

Version 1.0.47.02 is a bug-fixing release.

This freeware program lets power users perform complex operations by pressing a few keys. A quick glance shows that the AutoHotkey script language offers a wide range of opportunities.

First, it can run programs, manipulate program windows, and send keystrokes or mouse clicks. Multimedia or Internet keyboards are supported, and you can plug in nonstandard devices. It can also handle files and folders. For instance, it can check whether there is enough free disk space, then delete all temporary files if there isn't. Most remarkably, you can pack your scripts into EXE files that will run on any PC, even without AutoHotkey installed.

AutoHotKey hogs a grand total of only 1MB of memory when running in the background. However, the user interface is minimal, so you will have to read the manual carefully and write scripts yourself. The program works great as a script-running engine, but we would like to see more tools in the interface, such as a script library and an integrated scripting environment. AutoHotkey should appeal to advanced users with some command of scripting and a dislike for removing their fingers from the keyboard.

  "Excellent program! I have saved countless hours!"

  Pros: Very straight forward code to learn; to the point that it's almost too simple (at first I kept over thinking what I needed to code, when in reality the macro I created required few lines of code). I like the fact that the editor is simple notepad and allows for easy trouble shooting almost on the fly. Many options make this FREE program very powerful. I?m happy and shocked that it?s free. The extensive help documentation included with this download give insight into the nuts and bolts of the program with helpful examples.

  Cons: The fact that the program relies on X,Y coordinates for telling the mouse where to move and click is simplistic on one hand. However If when I tried to load the Macro file I created on a co-workers computer we had to change the his screen resolution or change the codes x.y to his specific computer setting to match mine. If not the mouse clicks the wrong area. Even with this inconvenience this program has saved so many hours of monotony that it's a minor complaint and I still give an easy 5 stars.

  "Good program, takes time to learn"

  Pros: The program works really well, although it does have quirks.

  Cons: It will take a little testing to make it work if you're doing more just really basic things. The documentation could be better. It would be nice to have more examples to follow.

  "Powerful & simple to use product, once you get to know its slightly quirky style"

  Pros: For getting simple things automated, it's very easy to use. But after using AHK for 3 years, there's still enough potential in there to handle some pretty complex tasks and to even make nice GUIs as well. Extensive help system, solid support from the author and an active user forum really helps keep this program vibrant.

  Cons: The syntax is slightly quirky, but then again this isn't meant to be a replacement for a more heavy duty programming language like Java Script.
