Downloading files is easy, but uncompressing them? Not quite as simple. ZIP files aren't much of a problem, but what about RARs, ARCs, and TARs? AutoExtract can help. It's a tiny utility that runs in the system tray and watches a particular folder. When a new archive file appears, AutoExtract automatically unpacks it. By default, it uses the good old 7-Zip utility for unarchiving, but you can modify the settings to have different compression utilities handle different file types. So far so good, but unfortunately, AutoExtract had some problems in our tests. It only worked smoothly when monitoring the Desktop folder.
When we tried to switch to another folder, it crashed. We also were irritated that we couldn't change the folder for uncompressed files. Given all that, we'd carefully check out other programs before paying the $10 registration fee for AutoExtract.
