Version: ArtRage 2.5
"A good programme - even the free version"
Pros: At last a cheap way to do proper painting / drawing the old fashioned way, but using a mouse. Paint goes on realistically. FREE VERSION IS HIGHLY USEABLE!!. You can rub paint out with the pencil eraser.
Cons: Your kids probably won't let you not buy the full version

Version: ArtRage 2.5
Pros: It's essentially a digital easel, and the tools act realistically. Paint runs out after you use it (holding down the button, of course), but replenishes once you click again. It's like dipping your brush over and over. Natural. There are dozens of stencils to choose from, ranging from your standard letters and numbers to more complex things like snowflakes. You can even make your own! Aside from that, you can also drag some other pictures onto the page and trace them, recreating your own works (or someone else's).
Cons: "Some features disabled" basically applies to everything I've mentioned. You get what's visible in the preview image, so you can still create wonderful works of art, but you're left feeling bare.
