Simple system searches are certainly achievable with this app, but doing them quickly is another matter. Argus Panoptes' top-down interface approach is logical and easy to figure out for any level user. You merely enter a search term and choose a search option. The program uses search templates, saved search methods, and rules. The included templates perform exact text, extensive, phonetic, or regular expression searches. All search templates use combinations of 15 rules to determine the search matches. Creating personalized templates is possible, but only for more advanced users.

The program's search-scope window makes it easy to preset folders and files to search and manage filters. You even can create filter templates that operate much like the search rule sets. Search results are easily directed to XML, HTML, CSV, or plain-text files. It's a snap to save the state of rules and templates for the current search as a configuration file. Calling up the saved states is a mere matter of choosing them from a file dialog.

Argus Panotpes falls behind similar system search programs in speed. It just isn't as quick as Copernic or Google Desktop search. However, this easily recommended freeware offers a variety of simple methods for new users while retaining search power for advanced users.
