Editors' review

Providing real-time Web site information is what Amazon Associate Toolbar does best, but some of its claims were unsubstantiated during testing. Rather than install a toolbar to your IE window, it is integrated with the Windows shell. By simply right-clicking and selecting Get Alexa Data, you can find all sorts of information about the site you're browsing, including company info, traffic details, statistics, and related links. You can even write a site review and e-mail the site to a friend.

While the publisher's description cited that it comes with a pop-up blocker, we weren't able to find one. Also, the title is a bit misleading, as most users would expect to find an actual toolbar. Despite these setbacks, the program does provide reliable results, and any regular Web surfer should try this free plug-in.

    "Privacy concerns"

    August 16, 2012   |   By rottndandie

    Version: Amazon Associate Toolbar 1

    Pros

    The toolbar works well.

    Cons

They collect personally identifiable information in addition to what web sites you visit and what you buy online, not just at Amazon. This is a horrible invasion of privacy that companies have come to perpetrate on the public without hesitation. When identity theft is so rampant, it's up to us to protect ourselves against this kind of abuse. I'd rather pay for software that doesn't violate my privacy than get something like this for free that steals information about me and my family for whatever purpose they want.

    Summary

No thank you! I value my privacy and this company has no business gathering information about me like this. Cnet should have warned users about it BEFORE we download it, not after.
