This free, open-source word-processor strikes us as a worthy alternative to pricey, big-name products. AbiWord's interface is very similar to programs such as Word and WordPerfect, so the learning curve is quick. You'll find just about all the customary features you'd expect, including cut-and-paste, highlighting, and a bevy of common formatting tools. Although we did miss a grammar-checking utility, the program can check your spelling in many languages, though you'll need to choose the appropriate foreign language dictionaries during installation. A huge point in the program's favor is it can open and save Microsoft Word documents, though it also has its own proprietary file format. AbiWord should appeal to a wide range of users who seek a functional word-processing app, but lack a large bank account.

AbiWord is a lean yet full-featured word processor. It features a familiar-looking interface, basic character formatting, paragraph alignment, a spell checker, interactive rulers and tables, styles, unlimited undo/redo capabilities, find and replace, and image support. It can also import Microsoft Word 97 and RTF (Rich Text Format) documents, as well as support superscript/subscript and ruler toggling. Also contains a help system (called AbiWord end-user manual), a column dialog, a GOTO dialog, a new tabulation dialog, and more update localization.

Previous versions added a Lists dialog, font handling and printing, and headers, footers, and page numbering support. The latest version features miscellaneous enhancements and bug fixes.
