CNET Editors' review
Creating a DVD, especially if you want custom title menus and other such personalization, isn't always an easy feat. AVStoDVD doesn't exactly make this task easier -- it's certainly not the most intuitive program we've used -- but it does provide plenty of options for the technically competent. If you're looking for a tidy wizard-style program that will walk you through each step and keep all the jargon under wraps, AVStoDVD is probably not the best choice. If you have some familiarity with digital video already, it may be just the thing.
AVStoDVD's interface is fairly straightforward, at least to start with; a button allows users to browse to and add videos in a variety of different formats. If you don't want to do anything fancy, it's easy enough to just click the Start button and have the program burn the files to a DVD. If you do want to get fancy, there are check boxes for such things as "Edit Encoder Command Parameters at Runtime" and "Run Title AviSynth FrameServing Check at Runtime." If you don't know what this means, don't expect any guidance from the Help file; it assumes a level of familiarity with video editing that most casual users don't possess.
We did like the fact that AVStoDVD lets users create custom DVD menus, allowing the freehand arranging of chapter thumbnails, custom background images, and such. Overall, we think that AVStoDVD offers an impressive suite of features that will please users who've been around the block a few times with the DVD-creation process. If you're a DVD newbie, skip AVStoDVD and seek out something a little more novice-friendly.
AVStoDVD installs a desktop icon without asking but uninstalls cleanly.

"good program"
Version: AVStoDVD 2.3.2
Pros
it does what it says it does and has quite a few options
Cons
A little complicated to use. "DVDFLICK" is also free. It does the same thing as this program, but is a lot less complicated to use
Summary
If you want the bells and whistles, use this program. If you want a more simple straight forward program get "DVDFLICK". Both are good for making dvd's.

"very, very good, very pleased with end result"
Version: AVStoDVD 2.2.0
Pros
customize menu to input own background image, set fonts and colour, set chapter length etc. no loss in quality, doesn't take forever. lots of options to fiddle with if tech savvy. dunno about burner, because use ashampoo, another excellent freebie
Cons
haven't found any yet.
Summary
highly recommend it. have tried a number of free authoring tools from this site. tops them all so far. alternatives, but not as good IMHO, are dvd styler (seems to have certain issues with border colours) and dvd flick (takes forever)...will update with final verdict when have tried all i have found

"Excellent for a free product."
Version: AVStoDVD 2.2.0
Pros
Lots of options available. It's four programs working together. A lot more features than the two other paid software I've used before (Any-Video-to-DVD & HT Burn DVD) and works much much faster.
Cons
Nothing to complain so far as long as you remember to change the default setting to NTSC otherwise you'll ended up with a PAL disc.
Summary
Don't see how you can complain about something that's free and has this much to offer.

"Not intuitive, Help sucks"
Version: AVStoDVD 2.2.0
Pros
Sounds good on paper.
Cons
Lost my patience -- the GUI and Help files speak Geek, untranslated.

"GREAT PROGRAM THAT REALLY WORKS!!!"
Version: AVStoDVD 2.1.2
Pros
Unlike other countless "free" AVI to DVD programs that exist out there, this one really works!! It even creates a nice menu at the beginning of your DVD for you! This is the ONLY ONE I've come across that works to my ease and satisfaction.
Cons
A 4.29 Gig VIDEO TS file took over 5 1/2 hours to encode and process, but that's to be expected. If you don't care too much about quality and want it quicker, DVDVideoSoft's Free Video To DVD program also works but the results are not as good.
Summary
This one is easy to use and free and it really does the job!!

"Shop Smart...Shop Street Smart"
Version: AVStoDVD 1.2.1
Pros
I awoke this morning from my sleepless slumber to the sounds of DVD burning despair. These aforementioned obscenities were coming from my computer savvy yet incredibly dense roommate's attempts at using his antiquated DVD-Rs. Three long, frustrating days and those george lowe (space ghost) youtubes were no closer to making it to the big screen than they were when the first crime of unrecognized genius was committed. When my naivete query about the situation was met with scorn, the classic battle between streetwise resourcefulness and inside-the-box intellect would begin. If not for my crackerjack research skills and dedicated patronage to this site, I would not have succeeded in my endeavor. As it should be though, good triumphs over evil again when I weeded out the endless amounts of abominable encoding/burning softare that I had to search through to get to this prodigious piece of software you're considering downloading at this very moment. Well, if my heroic effort alone doesn't inspire you to download, then I'm sure you'll be convinced by the fact that this program is watermark free, fully functional, and really easy to use.
